Supergirl Review: Manhunter (Season 1 Episode 17)

Reviews, Supergirl

Okay I have to admit that I should have done more research before assuming Supergirl had planned to simply write Lucy and Siobahn off (although, I stand by Adam being fairly pointless). Clearly, the show has bigger plans for both girls.

National City is still reeling from Supergirl’s bout with Red Kryptonite–the people don’t trust her anymore and she is struggling to deal with that. However, she does manage to win back at least one person this week. Lucy has returned as part of a military investigation into Jonn Jones/Hank Henshaw about what happened to the real Hank. She’s set on doing her job by prosecuting Jonn for lying and impersonating such a key DEO figure. Lucy is forced to choose between following military orders and doing the right thing.

Kara reveals her identity as Supergirl to Lucy in an attempt to get her to do the right thing: to let Hank and Alex go, saving them from a likely horrific fate at Project Cadmus. Thankfully, her revelation isn’t too little too late and the girls team up to save Kara’s family just in time. Karma works quickly in the world of Supergirl and Lucy is given control of the DEO shortly after the rescue. This is one of the best moves Supergirl has made so far–Lucy is finally getting more to do and hopefully she will be more involved with the team.

Meanwhile, Siobahn attempts to get revenge on Kara for getting her fired. Unfortunately, she commits email fraud to do it. I want to believe Siobahn is a smart girl, but after her last failed attempt at subterfuge got her fired one would think that she’d have been smarter about plotting her vengeance. However, it appears her entire storyline so far has been a hastily put together super villain origin story.

Siobahn saves herself after an accidental trip off a roof by screaming at a supersonic level, slowing her fall. Where will she go from here? Will she attempt to use her powers against Kara only to come head to head with Supergirl? Is the revelation of her powers the beginning of her end? Where did her powers come from? As you can see, I have a lot of questions about this plot twist.

Speaking of plot twists, once Jonn is freed he uses his mind meld powers on his captor and learns some very interesting information. Apparently, Alex and Kara’s father is still alive and being held in a secret military experimentation lab called Project Cadmus. Alex and Jonn have gone rogue and are now on a mission to save him. What will this mean for Kara and Alex? What has been happening to him for the last 10 years?

Alex: This is rock bottom and I know what kind of person I’m going to be.

Jonn proves his loyalty to the Danvers sisters yet again, revealing that he promised their father on what he thought was his deathbed, to protect the girls. It’ll be interesting to see how the last ten years have changed Jeremiah Danvers. Will he still be the father the girls remember or will that role have irrevocably shifted to Jonn?

Other thoughts:

  • Kara’s interview at CatCo was incredibly endearing and Cat’s continued support of both Kara and Supergirl is a constant delight. More of this relationship please.
