5 Revival Series You Really Should Be Watching

Doctor Who, Heroes Reborn, Lists, Supergirl

We are in the time of remakes and revivals — TV shows and movies alike. We are seeing more and more beloved characters get a second chance, and many of them have used that second chance well. Here is a list of revived shows that came back with a vengeance.

5. Heroes Reborn

Thanks to a bombarding of recent comic book movies and TV shows, superheroes are once again cool, and it’s okay to be a “nerd.” The audience no longer has to hide their love for characters that have powers — for a reality so close to ours, yet just a little mythical.

But that was not the case in 2006.

After four seasons of the original run, NBC canceled the show due to low ratings, but it still acquired a huge cult following. Which is why earlier this year, a revival was made!

Heroes Reborn jumps five years into the future, and shows the consequences the events of series finale had on the world. While many original characters come back, Heroes Reborn adds a number of new, great cast members — like Zachary Levi and Ryan Guzman. Ratings have been strong since its premiere in September, and reviews have been good! Rumors of a second season are already surfacing, so this is definitely a show worth checking out.

4. Doctor Who

You may not watch it, and you may think it’s incredibly cheesy, but almost everyone has heard of The Doctor. Originally, the show aired in 1963, and ran for 26 seasons, being canceled due to low ratings in 1989.

In 2005, BBC decided to do a remake. The show is currently still running, and doing very well! Though it comes off as an incredibly silly, even cheesy drama, Doctor Who has a way of sneaking into your heart and really having you get invested in the characters. Since the show has been on in 2005, four different actors have played the part of The Doctor. Each doctor has brought a different set of traits, and story arcs to the show, making it unique and quite interesting to follow.

This show is the true meaning of timeless. It will make you laugh and cry, and maybe even take over your life for a while. It’s not a cult classic for nothing.

3. Supergirl

Keeping the theme of “it’s cool to be a nerd” alive, Greg Berlanti decided to add Supergirl to his roster of DC TV shows following the Flash and Arrow. This CBS reboot of the DC Comics character sees Melissa Benoist in the title role as 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, who is sent to Earth from Krypton under duress when she was 13.

The show has a freshness rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and has received a lot of praise for continuously showing such strong female leads and supporting characters. In the midst of her heroism, Kara faces some very real life problems that we can all relate to. Benoist plays a vulnerable, maybe even a little apprehensive character with great finesse, which really brings this origin story to life.

2. Daredevil

After the movie that everyone sheepishly pretends didn’t happen, Marvel took to Netflix to make a small screen reboot. They say that we are living in the best time for television at the moment, and Daredevil helps prove that. The series follows a blind Matt Murdock; an struggling attorney living in New York City, using his heightened senses and ninja skills to bring justice to all the bad folks asking for it over thirteen episodes.

The show is critically acclaimed, and caused a lot of hype when it first premiered. The action sequences are choreographed to the T, and the show has a dry, witty, Aaron Sorkin-esque, sense of humor — minus all the monologues.

Marvel really nailed this reboot, and our forgotten superhero, Matt Murdock, has finally been redeemed.

1. Girl Meets World

Surprised to see this on the list — let alone at the top? Bare with me, as I explain to you why.

When it was first announced that Boy Meets World would have a reboot series, but would now follow the daughter of Corey and Topenga- everyone, and I mean, every single person who lived in the 90s was apprehensive. When the show premiered, I was worried, absolutely horrified that it would be another mindless comedy show the Disney channel has made itself known for (Dog with a Blog? Really?).

But it wasn’t. It isn’t. The show starts off and holds it own. There’s chemistry between the main characters, and they talk about newer problems that kids today face (ie: Cyber bullying.) Sure, it’s goofier than Boy Meets World, but you can’t help but fall in love with these characters. Everything isn’t as cut and dry as it was with Corey and Topenga when it came to love, and I have found myself way too invested in the love lives of these 13-year-olds. The show has made me cry on more than one occasion, and I find myself actually learning a lot of what kids today have to face as they grow up in the world today.

Girl Meets World does for kids today exactly what Boy Meets World did for us back then. It teaches us how to be kind, and it teaches us the important things in life. It makes us laugh and motivates us to set out and find friends and Shawn and Corey. Add in a couple of guest appearances from fan favorites of the original series, and you can’t help but smile.
