Sense8 Review: We Will All Be Judged By the Courage of Our Hearts (Season 1 Episode 8)
Sense8 has officially taken it to the next level with this episode, guys.
Can we talk about that chase scene for a second?! I mean, WOW! We got a great look at how this cluster can and will work together to save each other, and it was beyond epic! Will contributing his police smarts, Sun delivering the beat down, and Capheus acting as the getaway driver? Perfection.
You also have to love how Will and Nomi – the two sensates with the most information about their situation – interact with each other.
They’ve both put on their crime-solving hats, working together to find out who is after them and why. Their ability to share knowledge, despite not really understanding how, gives their partnership a fun and mysterious vibe.
Amanita: Okay, you’re having a conversation with an cop in Chicago right now?
Nomia: I guess I am.
Amanita: Cool. FaceTime without a phone.
And again, Amanita takes the ‘Best Girlfriend Ever’ award for not only being totally chill with the psychic connection thing, but also faking a tampon change in order to distract the creepy goons after Nomi. Love that girl.
The biggest bit of progress that particular plot gave us was a name: BPO
That’s right kiddos, we now have a name for our creepy, sensate-killing, government organization. They apparently operate out of Iceland – oh no, Riley! Get out of there! – and they’re majorly funded in a majorly scary way. Not to mention, they’re linked to Will’s investigation into Jonas Maliki.
And the pieces all start coming together…
Elsewhere, in their own little love bubble, Wolfgang and Kala continue to grow closer. After Felix’s awful shooting last week, I was worried that he was dead and gone.
Fortunately, he’s just a little banged up – okay, a lot banged up – which has Wolfgang pretty torn up. Their childhood flashback sequence is definitely one of the weaker parts of the episode, squeezed into odd places with strange transitions, but it does paint a better picture of how these two ended up where they are.
As criminals, as best friends, and as family.
Wolfgang: He’s my brother. Not by something as accidental as blood. By something much stronger.
Kala: What?
Wolfgang: By choice.
Kala acts mostly as a witness to this retelling, not contributing much to the story on her own, but in this particular case it played off well. Wolfgang needed a shoulder and an outlet, and Kala provided.
It looks like he’ll need more than emotional support in the future though, since this diamond business is absolutely nowhere near done. Felix’s drive by shooting was just the tip of the iceberg, so Wolfgang should probably watch his back.
Another conflict on the rise is Capheus’ current Abaka predicament. He’s stuck between a rock and hard place, wanting to quit Abaka’s service, even though it means seeing his mother finally healthy again. Not to mention, the threat against her life if he doesn’t hand Amundi over to Abaka’s enemies.
Either way, his mother is in danger, and we all know that Capehus would do anything to keep her safe.
I doubt he’ll hand over an innocent little girl to save his mother’s life, especially when he just saw first hand how Abaka deals with meager thieves. Can you imagine what he’d do to the man who sold out his daughter?
At this point I’m not even going to comment on Lito’s story. He is legitimately living in a separate, soap-opera world right now.
Other Thoughts:
- Sun is a kind-hearted badadss. My favorite kind of character!
-
Why doesn’t Riley drive anymore? Hmmm.
- Kids fighting about taxes in the streets of Berlin? Sure….
-
Hard core second hand embarrassment for Will when his partner found him kissing air.
