Rules of Prey to Star Jensen Ackles on MGM+
Jensen Ackles is set to star as a former detective for MGM+’s Rules of Prey.
Deadline exclusively reported that the streamer had greenlit the original series, which is an adaptation of Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist John Sandford’s acclaimed book series Prey. Created by showrunner and executive producer Bruce Terris, Rules of Prey will be based on the first book in the 35-book collection.
Ackles, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, will lead the series as Lucas Davenport. The character is described as “a righteous avenging angel whose sharp mind, unconventional approach, and unwillingness to let the law get in the way of justice forced him out of the Minneapolis Police Department.”
Lucas is pulled back into law enforcement when a series of murders appear to send a message specifically for him.

When an ingenious serial killer begins murdering Minneapolis citizens, Davenport, a brilliant polymath and unconventional investigator, takes the case, sparking an intense psychological duel with an equally intelligent adversary. As Davenport deciphers the killer’s twisted moral code and personal vendetta, he must match wits with a predator operating by his own rules of justice, risking everything to stop a killer who sees their conflict as the ultimate game.
“Jensen Ackles’ classic leading man charisma, combined with Bruce Terris’ skillful adaptation of John Sandford’s enduringly popular Prey series is an excellent fit for MGM+,” Michael Wright, global head of MGM+, said in a statement.
“The series delves into the psychological depth and suspense that made Sandford’s novels unmissable reading and continues MGM+’s commitment to bringing classic Hollywood storytelling to modern audiences,” Wright continued.
Rules of Prey is Jensen Ackles’s latest collaboration with MGM Television. He is already set to appear in The Boys‘s spinoff series, Vought Rising, next year. In which, Ackles will reprise his role as Soldier Boy opposite Aya Cash as Stormfront.
The executive producers for Rules of Prey include Charles Gogolak and Matt Leipzig (Modern Literary Arts), Howard Braunstein, Michael Jaffe, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, and John Weber .John Sandford serves as co-producer. Executive producer Daniel Sackheim will also direct the first two episodes.
The eight-episode season, produced by MGM Television and Take 5 Productions, will begin production this month in Toronto.
