Wonder Man Canceled by Disney+ Despite Season 2 Renewal
A renewal isn’t necessarily a guarantee that a show will actually return for a second season. The Disney+ superhero series Wonder Man is the latest example.
Variety exclusively reported that Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man has been canceled after one season. Deadline corroborated the news.
In March, it had been announced that Wonder Man would be getting a second season. It is comparable to the cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin in August 2025. It also had a previously announced Season 2.
According to Variety, a writers’ room for Wonder Man Season 2 was never assembled before this reversal. The report also indicates that the titular character, Wonder Man/Simon Williams, might appear in later Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
The news also comes as a shock given Wonder Man attracted strong reviews. Tell-Tale TV’s Chris Gallardo called the eight-episode Wonder Man Season 1, “a genuinely fun and stimulating buddy drama that puts a confident spin on Hollywood stardom stories while keeping it unique to the MCU.”
Abul-Manteen II earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his Wonder Man performance.
Wonder Man was both a superhero story and a Hollywood-set comedy. Williams is an actor, starring in a remake of an in-universe superhero movie called Wonder Man. He also has actual superpowers, specifically control over ionic energy.
But those powers are not an asset to his performance as a superhero. Instead, Simon has to hide his powers. A workplace safety clause in his contract bans superpowered individuals from starring in Hollywood productions.
The supporting cast included Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley), the washed-up actor introduced in 2013’s Iron Man 3, posing as the super-villain Mandarin. Other actors appeared on the show as fictionalized versions of themselves, including Josh Gad and Joe Pantoliano.
Wonder Man was co-created by Andrew Guest (Hawkeye) and filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. Cretton had previously directed the 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel Studios, and also directed 2026’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
