Dexter: Original Sin Canceled Despite Season 2 Renewal
In a turn of events, the Dexter prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, will not be returning for a second season on Paramount+ with Showtime after all.
Set in the 1990s, Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone) starred as a younger Dexter Morgan, “as he transitions from student to avenging killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness,” per the show’s description.
Michael C. Hall reprised his role as the titular character, voicing Dexter’s thoughts. Dexter: Original Sin also starred Molly Brown, Christian Slater, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Dempsey, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson.

It debuted with Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Episode 1, “And In The Beginning,” in December 2024. The freshman series was originally renewed six weeks after Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Episode 10, “Code Blues,” streamed in February.
Despite that renewal, Variety‘s sources “say the series has in fact been on hiatus and no plans to shoot a second season had moved forward and no production dates were scheduled.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the Dexter franchise moved from Showtime/MTV Entertainment into the reborn Paramount Television Studios under Matt Thunell,” after a change in leadership at Paramount with the Skydance merger.
Reportedly, Paramount remains invested in the Dexter franchise and has its focus set on Dexter: Resurrection, which stars Michael C. Hall and takes place weeks after the events of Dexter: New Blood.

That sequel series has yet to be officially renewed, but reports signal that a writers room for a second season may begin work soon. Dexter: Resurrection debuted with a two-episode premiere in July 2025, and its first season will wrap up in the first week of September.
“The premiere episode drew 3.1 million viewers over its opening weekend and grew to 4.4 million after seven days; Paramount says the Aug. 15 episode drew the show’s largest audience of the season,” per THR. The aforementioned episode is Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 Episode 7, “Course Correction.”
The same outlet’s sources share that Paramount’s investment in Dexter‘s future means just that, focusing on “unfolding story of Resurrection rather than filling in more of the character’s life in a continued prequel series.”
