Ellen Pompeo to Lead and Executive Produce ‘Chicks’ on Hulu
Chicks is set to be Ellen Pompeo’s latest show on Hulu.
The Grey’s Anatomy actress, who still recurs on and narrates the longest-running medical drama, is set to star in and executive produce Chicks.
Katie The dramedy pilot was written by Katie Robbins, whom Pompeo collaborated with on Hulu’s Great American Family. Deadline reports that the drama series pulled in “6.3 million views in its first six days on the platform.”
Great American Family also starred Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid. Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue and Jenny O’Hara were recurring guest stars.
Robbins created and executive produced the limited series, while serving as co-showrunner with Sarah Sutherland. Pompeo executive produced Great American Family through Calamity Jane with Laura Holstein.
Variety reports that Chicks is “an original idea based on conversations Pompeo and Robbins had on” that set.
This show will be set against the backdrop of “the rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods of old Boston.” Pompeo would star as Chickie, while there is no word on who will play Doreen. The two are “estranged half-sisters who are both struggling to get by when their wise guy dad unexpectedly kicks the bucket,” per its synopsis.
“Their only inheritance is a legacy of two-bit crime that inspires them to run increasingly audacious frauds. As their con grows, so does their odd-couple bond, as they each start to fill the father-shaped hole in the other’s heart,” it continued.
Deadline, which exclusively broke the news, reports that the Chicks pilot “is eying a September start of production in New York.” It’s also part of the streamer’s more recent shift to producing traditional pilots instead of straight-to-series orders.
Robbins executive produces and writes the show that comes from 20th Television. Pomepo will executive produce Chicks under her Calamity Jane banner alongside Laura Holstein.
She has taken up a reduced role as Dr. Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy since 2019, but she still serves as an executive producer. More recently, it was announced that Ellen Pompeo would also executive produce the show’s latest spinoff series set in West Texas.
