Invincible Season 4 Catch-Up: Everything You Need To Remember

Features

Animated series Invincible will be returning for its fourth eight-episode season on Prime Video this month. Based on the superhero comic by writer Robert Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, Invincible Season 4 is set to reach the midpoint of the source material.

Invincible is never an easy ride for its hero, Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), and Season 4 will likely be no different. The season is set to introduce Grand Regent Thragg (Lee Pace), leader of the imperious Viltrum Empire, and radical environmentalist super-villain Dinosaurus (Matthew Rhys).

Last season put Mark in the toughest fights for his life yet. If you need a refresher, then here’s everything you need to remember about Invincible Season 3:

After Mark became a superhero in Invincible Season 1, one of his first friends he made was Eve “Atom Eve” Wilkins (Gillian Jacobs).

Eve was part of the Teen Team. Though she and Mark had sparks from the beginning, she was dating Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas), so he started dating Amber (Zazie Beetz).

Eve soon found out Rex was cheating on her, while in Invincible Season 2, Mark eventually realized he couldn’t keep Amber safe from his double life. In Invincible Season 2 Episode 8, “I Thought You Were Stronger,” Mark learned from a future Eve that she always carried a torch for him.

So, come Invincible Season 3, Mark confessed his feelings to Eve. They officially get together on Invincible Season 3 Episode 2, “A Deal with the Devil,” and spend all of the season together.

They even started a business together guarding super-villain prisons on Invincible Season 3 Episode 5, “This Was Supposed to Be Easy.”

The big twist of Invincible is that Mark’s Superman-esque dad, Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man (JK Simmons), is actually an invader. He was sent by the fascist Viltrum Empire to prepare Earth for their takeover.

On Invincible Season 1 Episode 8, “Where I Really Come From,” Nolan revealed the truth, and Mark rejected him. Cue a destructive battle that saw Mark battered, Chicago destroyed, and an emotional Nolan fleeing Earth.

Nolan returned on Invincible Season 2 Episode 3 “This Missive, This Machination!”, revealing he’d settled on planet Thraxa, filled with short-lived insect people. Unfortunately, Viltrumites showed up and arrested Nolan for abandoning his duties.

On Invincible Season 3 Episode 4, “You Were My Hero,” Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen) and Nolan broke out of prison with help from alien warrior, Battle Beast (Michael Dorn).

Nolan dropped a bombshell to Allen: there’s less than 50 Viltrumites left, and even fewer after they killed Nolan’s two executioners. The season left them there, but the Invincible Season 4 trailer shows Nolan and Allen coming to Earth to recruit Mark for a war.

Mark’s half-brother Oliver is now a superhero

Invincible Season 2 Episode 4, “It’s Been A While,” revealed Nolan conceived a half-Thraxan son with his consort and asked Mark to raise him.

Mark obliged and took his new brother Oliver home. Due to his Thraxan DNA, Oliver aged from infant to preteen in months and has purple skin. He’s still Viltrumite enough to have powers, so he joined Invincible as a superhero: Kid Omni-Man.

Unlike Mark, Oliver is not at all human. So, he doesn’t grasp all of human culture, including the sanctity of life. Between that and Oliver’s reverence for his dad, there were concerns he might’ve inherited Viltrumite aggression. Thankfully, those concerns were quickly put to bed.

Mark broke with Cecil Stedman

What Nick Fury is to the Marvel Universe, Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins) is to the world of InvincibleA super-spy turned director of the Global Defense Agency (GDA), Cecil’s job is to monitor the world’s superheroes.

He spent most of Invincible Season 1 investigating the murder of the Guardians of the Globe, eventually piecing together that it was Nolan. After Invincible’s battle with his dad, Cecil offered to help him out by putting Invincible on the GDA payroll.

But that didn’t last. On Invincible Season 3 Episode 1,  “You’re Not Laughing Now,” Mark learned Cecil was employing super-villain Darkwing (Cleveland Berto) and mad scientist D.A. Sinclair (Eric Bauza), who vivisected people to create zombie soldiers, “Reanimen.”

Mark was infuriated and confronted Cecil. Then Cecil revealed that while Mark was healing from his fight with his father, he had a sonic device placed in his brain to shatter his equilibrium. Earth faced one Viltrumite unprepared, and Cecil didn’t want that again.

Cecil’s shady actions caused the new Guardians of the Globe to split.

Every superhero needs an arch-enemy, the foe driven to destroy them personally. Superman has Lex Luthor, Batman has the Joker, Reed Richards has Doctor Doom, and Invincible has Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown).

Angstrom debuted on Invincible Season 2 Episode 1, “A Lesson For Your Next Life.” He possesses the power to open portals to different dimensions.

Angstrom came seeking vengeance on “I Thought You Were Stronger,” holding Debbie and Oliver hostage as he sent Mark to different dimensions. Mark lost control and seemingly beat Angstrom to death, but Season 3 revealed he survived.

In most universes, Mark goes bad one way or another. So, Angstrom summoned 18 evil versions of Invincible and then, on Invincible Season 3 Episode 7, “What Have I Done?,” let them loose on Earth.

It took all superheroes to defeat the Invincibles, and many didn’t make it: Rex Splode was among the casualties.

Conquest showed Invincible his toughest battle yet

Back on “It’s Been A While,” Viltrumite General Kregg (Clancy Brown) warned Mark that the Viltrumites would be checking on his progress preparing Earth for them. On Invincible Season 2 Episode 7,  “I’m Not Going Anywhere,” Anissa (Shantel VanSanten) followed up on that promise.

She was Mark’s last warning, telling him someone much worse would come next time. With Earth and Mark reeling from the Invincible War, the Viltrumite Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) arrived in the final scene of Invincible Season 3 Episode 7.

Conquest is one of the oldest of the Viltrumites and their most brutal weapon; one of his arms is a cybernetic replacement for his true limb, presumably lost in battle. True to his name, Conquest relishes nothing else more.

Conquest’s attack on Invincible Season 3 Episode 8, “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up,” revealed the depth of Eve’s powers. On the brink of death, her body automatically rebuilds itself. She might be as immortal as a Viltrumite.

Meanwhile, Cecil has the unconscious but alive Conquest in prison, intending to grill him for info about the Viltrum Empire.
