High Potential Season 2 Episode 15 Review: Pie in the Sky

High Potential, Reviews

Love and legacy clash. That’s the main dilemma in High Potential Season 2 Episode 15, “Pie in the Sky.” This ABC series often has a mixed bag with its cases of the week. Some of them are enthralling, but many don’t stand out, especially compared with the subplots involving Morgan and her family.

However, “Pie in the Sky” is one of the rare episodes in which the weekly case improves it. We want to know who killed Teddy. You sit and wonder where there will be a twist to tarnish this good astronaut’s name.

That moment never comes. Instead, it’s a heartbreaking story of a man dying and a woman wanting to preserve his memory…through murder. That’s where the story loses a bit of its way.

It doesn’t seem quite believable that someone would care more about a legacy than the person they love, even if they were dying. Wouldn’t they want as much time with them as possible? Nonetheless, the route to this big reveal provides plenty of entertainment.

This is another High Potential episode that makes you care about the victim. Teddy only appears on the screen for a few minutes, but hearing Elliot’s love for him, seeing the public’s positive response to him, and hearing his history make it easy to also care about this fallen hero.

We need justice for him.

The show’s strongest episodes balance our interest in the case with the more personal subplot. “Pie in the Sky” does exactly this.

The use of Elliot in this episode is also a really smart choice. We have seen High Potential incorporate Morgan’s home life into her work life, but not in this way.

Teddy is a hero to Elliot. Therefore, Morgan feels even more of a push to solve his case. It’s for Elliot.

This also makes us care about the character because of his impact on others. This little connection ties the story together well. It combines a little of Morgan’s personal life with the case, and that increases the stakes.

Selena goes off on her own to track down Willa Quinn. The show introduces a new layer to the Roman disappearance. We still haven’t made much progress with this case, but Willa is quite a disturbing character.

She has crime boss energy. This makes her a fitting adversary for Morgan, Karadec, and Selena.

Her power could really create problems for the team, but we have faith that they will stop her. The next few episodes are probably going to lean even heavier into the Roman case.

Willa’s introduction is the perfect next chapter to restore our interest. We have no clue what she can do, but fear her.

“Pie in the Sky” is another strong episode because it fascinatingly explores a case. We care because we’re compelled to want to know more. It also introduces another major player in Roman’s disappearance, while showcasing Selina as the cool character she has always been.

Stray Thoughts
  • As an It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fan, I love seeing Travis Schuldt on High Potential because I know Kaitlin Olson and he are friends. Feels like an Easter Egg for Sunny fans.
  • Oz’s running puns are fun. More moments like that with the character.
  • No one is surprised by Karadec’s lack of pop culture knowledge, but it’s still fun.
  • I still don’t trust Wagner, but curious what he adds to this case.
