Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 11 Review: On the Way

Chicago P.D., Reviews

Looking at the case that’s presented on Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 11, “On the Way,” there is nothing new. The Intelligence Unit has worked carjacking cases before, and Atwater has proven time and time again that he does an incredible job every time he goes undercover.

But it seems the point of the episode isn’t for the case to be the most important thing. On the contrary, it only serves as a starting point for what’s coming in Atwater’s life next.

Surprisingly, Chicago P.D. is finally digging deeper into Atwater’s personal life, giving him the opportunity to grow and have the same depth many of the other characters have. His personal life had always been a quick glance, but now the show has the opportunity to give fans a much deeper look at what will become of Atwater.

Every woman who has gotten close to Atwater left him behind for one reason or another. It always felt as if the show wasn’t allowing that part of this character’s life to shine as it had done with characters like Burgess, Ruzek, and Halstead.

Fox’s appearance on Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 5, “Miami,” made us believe Atwater would finally have a chance at love. After she left, we began to wonder if there would ever be a moment when he would get his loving, happy ending.

Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 11, “On the Way,” shows us the passing of time between Fox’s departure and her return. We see Kevin every morning, thinking of what to text her and deciding against it. We see him working on different cases and going undercover to explain to us that a few months have gone by.

The confirmation of the amount of time that has gone by since the two of them slept together comes when Fox arrives at his apartment and tells him she is about two months pregnant. Of course, our beloved Atwater is the father.

When Burgess tells Atwater that he needs more than the job and deserves more than simply settling for something, we know she never expected the answer to be a baby. But if we think about it, this is actually the perfect next step for Kevin.

Atwater is a character we have always seen as a family man. He’s taken care of his siblings for as long as we can remember, being the head of the family when his father was gone. He treats everyone on the team like family because he knows how important this bond is. So becoming a father seems like the culmination of a lifetime of putting family first.

The smile on his face when Fox tells him about the baby is the confirmation of everything we ever thought about him. He is ready for this. He wants this, and we know he will be great at it.

However, we do wonder if the show is ready to give Atwater the relationship he deserves. Will he and Fox find a way to navigate this parenthood journey? Will they decide to co-parent? Or will Atwater finally get the loving relationship he’s been waiting for all these seasons?
