Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 5 Review: Miami

Chicago P.D., Reviews

While Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 5, “Miami,” is Atwater’s episode, we cannot forget to highlight the importance of Trudy. Not only is she in charge of putting the operative downtown together, but she steps up when Devlin can’t.

The moment the bomb goes off, she kicks into gear and knows exactly what to do. Watching her tell Devlin what they need to do and lead Voight into the makeshift operations room, we know everything will work out because we trust her.

Trudy is the kind of character that isn’t always in the lead, but you can always count on. One knows if she’s there, everything’s going to be okay.

Beyond the case, the episode touches upon something viewers have always been thinking: why is Kevin always alone?

None of the love interests introduced for him have worked out; his siblings have left the state, and his father comes and goes. Now, Fox seems like a good fit, but she’s also leaving.

There’s no Mrs. Atwater on the horizon, and as he says it, he’s always the one being left behind. And while a significant other doesn’t make or break the characters, it seems to be a recurring theme in Kevin’s storyline.

We’ve seen him form deep bonds with women that eventually fall apart. Most of the time, this has happened because of his job.

It is clear that Atwater feels alone, and we wonder when enough will be enough. Hasn’t he paid his dues? Isn’t it time he finds the one?

The beauty of Chicago P.D. this season has been that even though the show still focuses on one character per episode, the storylines are moving along smoothly and in perfect synchronization.

The unit is still working the cases together, and they always catch the bad guy…or almost always.

Truthfully, a lot of the excitement lies within the editorial choices. When Fox and Atwater interview two witnesses, their statements get combined as if they were finishing each other’s sentences. This makes it more interesting to watch.

Then, when the bomb goes off near Kevin, we hear the echo of Kim’s voice among the deafening silence. That makes us feel closer to the scene.

The show continues to deliver consistently on storyline and performances, reminding us why we’re 13 seasons deep.

Even though it’s obvious Fox isn’t sticking around and she’s heading to Miami, her interactions with the team are quite great.

Her connection to Atwater is special, making their work together more important. For a split second, Atwater doesn’t trust her, but it’s all in his head when she saves his life.

And for a tiny moment in time, Atwater isn’t alone. He is with someone who knows him, who understands his devotion to Chicago, and who can also comprehend the feeling of being alone.

Hopefully, Atwater will eventually find that in a woman who will stick around and grow with him.
