9-1-1: Nashville, Reviews

Blue makes an unfortunate discovery on 9-1-1: Nashville Season 1 Episode 4, “Bad Case of the Blues.”

Dealing with family can be a difficult situation for many, but for Blue, it’s a chance to be a part of something he’s never had. However, that’s put in jeopardy after his actions while on a rescue at a water park.

After going viral online for his daring efforts, the chief drastically shortens Blue’s study timeline, forcing him to work overtime. Instead of learning at the pace of regular cadets, he now has to learn 26 weeks’ worth of material in one week.

Meanwhile, Bythe continues to follow her intuition and look into Dixie’s background. What she doesn’t plan to learn is the harsh realities of the life Blue has endured up to this point, and how good a kid he is.

On-the-Job Training

While his sights weren’t quite laser-focused yet, Blue has shown a drive to help others and to make a better life for himself since the beginning of the season. Another factor helping him on his journey is the instincts that stem from being Don’s son, which aid his learning endeavors.

Instead of having to do it all on his own, though, Station 113 bands together to give Blue the first-hand experience needed. From practicing on dummies to his first real save, his momentum never depletes.

Honestly, breaking down the barriers around Blue’s character and gaining a more profound sense of who he is has only made me grow even more fond of him.

Watching him gain his footing as a firefighter in training and apply himself has proven he’s here for all the right reasons.

Now, the real question is: will his most recent uncovery cause him to stray from that path?

A Shocking Revelation

It was only a matter of time before Blue learned the truth regarding his upbringing, but it feels just a bit too soon. Blue is finally getting on his feet, gaining the team’s trust, and enhancing his skills tremendously.

For him to continue growing as a firefighter, we need absolutely no distractions.

Finding his baby book in Don’s office is the worst thing that could happen right now. Rather than being able to soak up all of the joy and find genuine happiness in connecting with his estranged family, Blue’s focus will likely fall on learning the truth behind Don’s actions.

Thankfully, though, these developments mean he’s only one step closer to learning the truth about Dixie. Instead of continuing the guise of devising her entire plan for the betterment of Blue’s life, she’ll have to explain her actions.

There’s no denying the fact that Don could have done more while Blue was growing up. Being the parent who comes from money, he could fight Dixie in court for shared custody, but he took the easy route instead.

That said, it doesn’t change the fact that his own mother kept his father from him and lied to him for his entire life. How willing is Blue to forgive Dixie after discovering she took bribes and kept him away from Don for decades?

Hopefully, the pain and newfound rage Blue is likely feeling toward Don will be turned on Dixie instead.

Digging Up the Past

Blythe is just like every other wife. She wants to know every little detail about what’s going on in her husband’s and son’s lives, but that doesn’t mean things don’t always turn out as expected.

At her request, the Hart family’s private investigator digs into Dixie, finding that she could be a serious threat. However, he takes it a step further by looking into Blue on his own.

It leads Blythe down a rabbit hole she never intended, and opens her eyes to the heart Blue holds.

Believing that he is just as grimy as his mother is an easy assumption to make. But being able to look past her preconceived notions and accept reality is what makes her the bigger person.

Hopefully, Blue and Blythe begin their journey of bonding sooner rather than later.

Stray Thoughts:

  • 9-1-1: Lone Star might be canceled, but it’s nice to see the beloved characters still alive and well in the 9-1-1 universe. Blue owes a big thank-you to Firefox, aka Marjan, for his sudden online popularity.
  • The funniest moment of the episode is, hands down, Cammie having to make a Cam4Fans account to help save a young woman. We need more hysterical moments like these!
