Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack on Solar Opposites Season 6 and Memorable Series Moments
Much like its Adult Swim counterpart, Rick and Morty, it’s clear that Solar Opposites has had a lasting impact with its eccentric comedy, wacky sci-fi device shenanigans, and surprisingly deep side stories.
Now that it’s reached its last season, it truly feels like this series was something special. This odd gang of aliens-turned-sweet family took their opportunities to shine, and with Solar Opposites Season 6, their misadventures conclude in an insane fashion.
I had the opportunity to talk with series stars Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack to talk Solar Opposites Season 6, what they loved the most about this season, and their own ideas that are still up in the air.

When asked about what they love about the show in its entirety, Giambrone and Mack acknowledged their love for the creatives they’ve worked with for so long.
“[It was] all the ground, all the storylines you’d never expect,” Giambrone began. “They make it filled with heart and humor. What the writers have done has really been just a cool thing.”
“I think that our bosses were super nice,” Mack added. “I really love working with Mike McMahan, Josh [Bycel], Sydney [Ryan], and Hulu. It’s crazy to have a job where you like everybody, that never happens to anyone.”
Mack also joked about how the open, collaborative opportunity might never come again. “It kind of is ruining me for every other job that I ever have, because I don’t know how that will ever happen again. I love the series, the writing, the animation, and the art,” Mack noted.
Though Giambrone and Mack have given their performances as Yumyulack and Jesse, respectively, throughout Solar Opposites, they also still had ideas of their own that they hope to bring to life one day.
“I’ve written like a spec script and then I was told you can’t submit anything like that,” Mack recalled. “I will say they really missed a grand opportunity to use my script where segues were heavily involved.”
“If this were to ever reinvent itself in another way, I don’t want to give up on my script, which involved a lot of segway writing, a lot of Girl Scout cookie eating, and capitalized on the competitive nature of the family.”

Meanwhile, Giambrone pointed out how he’d do more improvisation when it came to delivering Yumyulack’s lines. “There were some times where I’d build up into a line just to kind of get into the mood with the rhythm of it,” Giambrone said.
“As far as ideas [go], I was always really shocked whenever I read a script,” Giambrone added. “I’d learn something new or it’d be like, ‘I never could have come up with that.’ I’m so pleasantly surprised.”
Speaking more about some of the things on Season 6 that reflected the series as a whole, Solar Opposites Season 6 Episode 5, “The Family Memories VHS Mix Tape,” really leaned towards nostalgia. Giambrone and Mack reminisced on recording for that episode.
“They gave [Sean] golden lines,” Mack began. “I just cited the joke he got to do: we had these virtual helmets on and we pulled them off and we’d have a phrase from the vernacular or a cliche or whatever.”
“His phrase is, ‘More cushion for the pushing,’ which is naughty, but the punchline is, ‘I’ll remember that the next time I’m at the couch store!'”
Furthermore, Mack brought up the one line that she loved all the way back on Solar Opposites Season 3. “I love my line when I said, ‘How long does it take to sexually awaken?’ She’s got a timer on it and she means business!”

Giambrone also brought up the one line that stood out to him in the past. “I used to watch that show, Pimp My Ride. That coming up and getting to say that, that was funny because I forgot about it.”
“Then, in the Dave Matthews band episode [“The Realm of Satin and Swords”], getting to say some of the song titles in that line, that’s in line with my sense of humor in real life. So I enjoyed trying to like hit those jokes. Those are some really good lines.”
Furthermore, Mack also brought up how insanely comedic and wild Terry has become throughout Solar Opposites. “Don’t you feel like the rest of the family is doing this, but Terry’s always going off the deep end? I love that trajectory for Terry,” Mack joked.
“I just think that also the writers have so much fun for his lines and his t-shirt sayings. I think that he would be the most fun character to write,” Mack added. “Terry on Solar Opposites is great!”
