Scott Wolf will be returning to the Fox medical drama Doc during the show’s ongoing second season.

He will reprise his role as Dr. Richard Miller for “a multi-episode guest arc,” as reported by TVLine. Wolf will reportedly not just return to act on Doc but will also be directing an episode for the series next year.

Doc follows Minneapolis physician Dr. Amy Larson, played by Molly Parker (DeadwoodHouse of Cards). Following a car accident, Amy develops amnesia and forgets all about the last eight years of her life — including a divorce from her husband and the death of their son.

Wolf was a member of the cast during Doc Season 1. Dr. Miller was the acting head of internal medicine at Westside Hospital (where the show is set) and a rival to Amy.

The character appeared to leave the series when Miller was fired in the Doc Season 1 finale, “…Must Come Down,” after it was revealed he had been responsible for the death of a patient and tried to frame Amy for it.

Amy was promoted to replace him; his return will renew the conflict between them, per the show’s creators.

“We always knew when Richard got fired that would never be the last of him. But no one expected him to come back to Westside like this — least of all Amy,” Doc co-showrunners and executive producers Barbie Kligman and Hank Steinberg said in a statement reported by Variety.

Doc is based on an Italian drama series, Doc – Nelle tue mani (meaning “In Your Hands” in English), with the same premise. That premise itself is based on the real-life story of Italian doctor Dr. Pierdante Piccioni, who lost 12 years of his memory after a car crash.
