Ghosts Season 4 Post-Mortem with Showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman [Interview]

Ghosts, Interviews

Ghosts ends Season 4 on a high note as it sells Jay’s soul to the devil and introduces a new pairing to its romantic roster.

This aging premise of a couple running a haunted B&B has captivated viewers, earning it a two-season renewal from CBS. I recently had the opportunity to ask Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, the EPs and showrunners of this delightful comedy, how they plan to use the rare double renewal to their advantage.

“It’s such a luxury. It will come in handy as we are talking out bigger arcs. It’s nice to know we don’t have to rush stuff if we feel we don’t want to,” Wiseman explained.

That also means more two-part episode events could be in the sitcom’s future.

“I was particularly proud of the Season 4 one-hour Christmas special,” Port revealed. “Everyone put a lot of work into that one — cast, crew, and writers combined.”

“It was just Ghosts at its best, from Rose’s incredible Betsy Sodaro impression, to Jay finally seeing the ghosts in a way that I don’t think anyone quite predicted. And it was so fun and emotional to finally meet Jay’s parents in that episode, Champa and Mahesh, both of whom we hope to see more of in Season 5.”

And we can’t reflect on this season without addressing H-Money’s rise to fame. It was an unlikely romantic pairing between finance bro Trevor and snobby socialite Hetty, but one the showrunners always knew would pay off.

“It was such a fun pairing. And Asher [Grodman] and Rebecca [Wisocky] are so good together. It’s been really fun to see how many people are shipping them online,” Wiseman said.

What truly makes Ghosts such a unique TV experience is how often and creatively it references other shows from beyond the grave.

When asked if all the Superstore castings (four to be exact) were merely a coincidence or if Ghosts is secretly rebooting the NBC comedy, Wiseman responded: “Haha, they had a great cast! We would be thrilled and lucky to have more people from that show.”

This comedy particularly loves finding ways to acknowledge Rose McIver’s work on iZombie. Because of this, fans of the cult CW show cannot help but wonder if a cameo from her co-stars isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility.

“Not out of the realm at all!” Port confirmed. “That was a very talented cast, and we’d be lucky to work with them.”

Port revealed there have already been attempts to reunite besties Liv Moore and Ravi Chakrabarti on the show. “I know we’ve explored Rahul Kohli for a couple roles, but I don’t think he was available at the time. It would be great to have him on at some point.”

With Season 4 delving into the remaining ghost powers, Ghosts will need to explore new avenues of lore soon. One episode in particular offers its showrunners an intriguing starting point.

“This last season, we learned more about the ghost trap and introduced a ghost gun. That seems like something we might explore again!” Wiseman teased.

While Ghosts was their first foray into paranormal comedy, it won’t be the duo’s last.

CBS recently confirmed Wiseman and Port are developing a vampire rom-com under the working title Eternally Yours. According to TVLine, the project’s official description is “an eternal love story about two vampires who have been married for five hundred years, and their struggles to accept the human who is dating their daughter.”

The project is still in early development. However, it does hint at the start of a paranormal comedy dynasty for the showrunners as they expand their undead roster beyond the walls of Woodstone.

For Wiseman, the supernatural comedy space is especially entertaining to play in.

“It’s great because it allows you to tell familiar and relatable stories, but with a unique flavor. Also, world-building is really fun to do!”

Season 4 of Ghosts is now streaming on Paramount+.
