Will Trent Season 3 Episode 14 Review: A Funeral Fit for a Quartermaine

Reviews, Will Trent

Sometimes, unexpected happy endings occur. After a few darker consecutive episodes, Will Trent Season 3 Episode 14, “A Funeral Fit for a Quartermaine,” takes a hopeful turn. Rafael and Sunny survive and ride off into the witness protection sunset.

Rafael Wexford has been the criminal that the series needed. He is charismatic, adds intrigue to Will’s life, and is simply a very entertaining addition. Because Rafael has been such a successful addition to the show, his exit almost feels too soon.

However, we know he should leave as a still beloved character rather than one who wears out his welcome.

Will Trent still has four episodes left in Season 3, and all the major storylines have wrapped. Therefore, we have no clue where these last episodes will go.

They could just focus on Will’s declining mental health (due to the shooting) or set up another multi-part storyline.

This is a scary prospect, considering how dark the season has become. However, that’s a problem for another day and another review. So, let’s continue to explore Rafael’s final hour (for now) on Will Trent.

Rafael’s departure doesn’t mean the end for the character completely.

The writers clearly see more value in keeping him alive with the potential to return somehow and someway. If we do see Rafael again, I don’t expect it for a while and in a random situation (maybe criminal consultant?).

However, we also wouldn’t be surprised if Rafael makes an appearance (via a phone call) before Season 3 ends.

“A Funeral Fit for a Quartermaine” is a fitting sendoff for the character and his grandmother.

We finally see how Will and Rafael develop their bond and the falling out. This makes their reunion and happy ending even sweeter.

They’re brothers. Complicated brothers, but still brothers above anything else.

Young Rafael and Will’s storyline plays out in many unexpected ways, like Will helping with the crime and learning of his love for suits.

We also see Will try to save Rafael and himself, but it ends with Rafael committing his first true crime to save Will. This explains why Will may feel a some guilt over Rafael’s life and decisions. He may feel partly responsible for how much Rafael got involved in the crime world.

Nevertheless, our favorite TV detective makes up for it to him by being the key factor in saving Rafael, and eventually helping him start over.

It’s a full circle moment for these men.

The young Will and Rafael storyline is just as interesting, or maybe more interesting, than the main storyline. Andres Velez and Yannick Haynes do such an impressive job at imitating Ramon Rodriguez and Antwayn Hopper’s mannerisms.

They feel like their direct counterparts.

Their storyline also feels like the making of a buddy crime movie. Watching them fight, then become besties, then dabble in crime, is fun until we know how it all ends.

We see the major falling out, but it’s easy to assume they have more encounters and interactions before their Season 3 reunion.

Will and Rafael are the center of this episode. However, Jake McLaughlin and Ormewood end up stealing the show.

Will Trent sends us on a misdirection by having Angie suspect Ormewood has begun drinking again. The reality is far more heartbreaking.

Ormewood has become such a vital part of the show that if he dies now, we’ll all be devastated. It doesn’t seem that that’s where any of this is heading.

It’s just a new complication for Ormewood’s increasingly complex home life.

Even though it’s unclear where this is all going to end up for Ormewood, it’s a compelling storyline because it allows the series to showcase McLaughlin beyond his silly, comedic relief persona.

He breaks your heart as he grieves his father and comes to the realization that he could lose his kids, but not in the way he feared. McLaughlin’s performance is really emotionally riveting and makes you remember the depth of the talented Will Trent cast.

“A Funeral Fit for a Quartermaine” offers a fitting and hopeful end to one of Will Trent’s best recurring characters. He will be missed (and hopefully return at some point). We are, however, excited to see what story arc will replace his now-closed Season 3 chapter.

Stray Thoughts
  • I love all the General Hospital references. Now the show needs to drop more in throughout next season to remind us that Will is a superfan.
  • I am worried that the Ormewood brain tumor storyline will open the door to have him commit some crimes and blame it on the tumor, but let’s hope not.
  • I can also see this being the opening of a door for Ormewood and Faith to begin their eventual romance.
  • Glad Jeremy escapes all this without facing death.
  • Dr. Seth seems more vital than Marion, unfortunately. I also hate that I like him, especially for Angie, because I know the show plans ab Angie and Will reunion and probably an end game.
  • If Will Trent ever decides to do a spin-off series, it should be called Young Will Trent(yes, like Young Sheldon) and follow Will in his teens and early 20s before he starts working for the GBI.
  • Young Rafael and Angie could make special appearances. Let’s greenlight that ABC.
