Reviews, Will Trent

Sometimes an episode’s potential outweighs its execution. Will Trent Season 3 Episode 6, “No Faith In Second Chances,” is the season’s first miss. By no means is it a bad episode but it just ends up feeling a bit lackluster.

However, the ending and setup for another two-part storyline incite some excitement for the next episode.

The biggest issue may come from the confusing nature of the John Shelly storyline. It all seems fragmented. The conclusion of “No Faith in Second Chances” clarifies why: There is much more happening than we know.

This explains why all the layers don’t quite align. It’s not time yet for us to fully understand it all.

Nevertheless, the delivery matters, and something about this one doesn’t quite excite.

It seems obvious from our initial encounter with John that he’s not this monster. However, it is a bit surprising to see the storyline continue beyond the initial episodes with him.

A quick Google search reveals that this Will Trent storyline takes inspiration from the book series. However, it’s likely going to take a different path.

Nevertheless, using the book for this storyline may explain some issues. It doesn’t flow naturally like some of the show’s other plots.

The major issue, however, is that this storyline feels rushed. Will Trent continues to race through storylines without letting enough development happen. We meet John and see Angie develop a connection with him.

Then, we believe it might at least lead to a strong friendship. Then his dark past comes out in Will Trent Season 1 Episode 3, “Find a New Pond.”

Now, he has returned and Angie wants to prove his innocence.

Angie trying to save John is an interesting plot, but we didn’t have enough time before this episode to care about his fate. Maybe Will Trent should have allowed viewers a few episodes with him to warm to the character.

However, the writers rushed Angie’s time as a security guard because they didn’t want us to miss her as an APD for too long.

My only assumption for all this rushing through things is that the season may be set up in two parts. The first six or seven episodes may all revolve around Angie’s return and redeeming her by allowing her to save John.

Then the back half will likely focus on something new, maybe a new story arc or more on Rafael, and whether Will and Amanda may need to take stronger action against him.

Before “No Faith in Second Chances,” the pacing of the ongoing storylines isn’t as noticeable. However, the rushed nature of the season becomes hard to ignore.

This is mainly because viewers now must care about John enough to hope Angie can save him. We are told to care, but not given enough information about him for it to happen naturally.

This is a problem because the first few appearances don’t allow the viewers to bond with him. This doesn’t happen because the show isn’t letting things breathe enough.

This problem appears again in “No Faith in Second Chances,” with Marion and Will’s romance. We knew it would happen, but it shouldn’t happen this soon.

Like with John, the viewers need more time to get to know Marion. Additionally, they need time to care whether Will and her get together. We don’t care about either.

This also automatically sets their romance up for failure. Viewers don’t like being told to like something. It needs to happen organically.

Ramon Rodriguez and Gina Rodriguez have decent chemistry, but the build-up doesn’t happen enough to really become giddy about them. Plus, the rushed nature of their romance almost confirms it won’t last long.

Quick couplings on a television show rarely lead to end-game potential. Plus, with Angie’s clear signs of jealousy, we might as well already expect a Will and Angie’s romantic reunion by the Season 3 finale or Season 4 premiere, at the latest.

“No Faith In Second Chances” makes us skeptical about the faith of Marion and Will’s future.

Overall, the episode showcases some pacing issues that have been ongoing this season as a confirmed questionable pattern and not a one-time mistake. However, the promise of an exciting two-part storyline makes it not a waste of time.
