Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sequel Series with Sarah Michelle Gellar In the Works at Hulu
The new generation may meet their Chosen One.
There is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series in the works at Hulu.
Variety reports that Sarah Michelle Gellar would reprise her role as Buffy Summers in a recurring role. The new untitled series — reportedly nearing a pilot order — would focus on a new Slayer. The outlet also shares that Hulu and 20th Televisions declined to comment.
Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to the project as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao is set to direct and executive produce the series under her Book of Shadows production banner.
Gellar would also executive produce the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series alongside Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B; Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce the series.
Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton executive produced the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, which premiered in 1997 and aired for seven seasons across UPN and The WB.
Deadline reports that a writers room for the sequel series will start soon, which is a good sign that the show will be ordered to series. The outlet also shares that other original Buffy the Vampire Slayer original cast members are likely to return. Some cast members reunited for an Audible series in 2023.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboots and revivals have been discussion points for a while. As recently as December 2024, Gellar commented on the possibility of revisiting the character on The Drew Barrymore Show.
“Watching Sex and the City [And Just Like That…] and seeing Dexter[: Original Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe,” Gellar said. “It could be anything. It’s a universe. It makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”
Deadline reports that the negotiations — now in their final stages — began around the time Gellar made those comments.
Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is notably absent from the sequel show’s creative team. As Variety reported in 2021, Whedon was accused of creating a toxic workplace environment.
