Recaps, Rescue: HI-Surf

Trouble and destruction are heading to the North Shore fast on Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 12, “Surge.”

Like most days on the beach, two tourists decide to rent kayaks and explore the ocean. On their journey, they come across a local man floating in the water, seemingly asleep.

When they wake him and ask what he’s doing, the old man explains that he’s listening to the ocean, and it’s warning him that something bad is coming.

Shrugging off the old man’s warning, the tourists continue their adventure without a worry in the world. The only problem is, he’s right — something bad is coming to the island.

At home, Jennings enjoys breakfast with his wife after their daughter leaves for school. A news report interrupts the moment, warning that an 8.6-magnitude earthquake has struck Russia.

For the North Shore, this means one thing: a tsunami. They have six hours to prepare the island and its residents for impact.

All lifeguards are called in, except for Will, who is away visiting family in Australia after his fiancée, Julie, called off their wedding upon discovering his affair with Em.

Jennings assigns tasks to his team, instructing them to get as many people to safety as possible. He then steps away to call his daughter, Ocean, to make sure she’s safe. But after multiple attempts, her phone goes straight to voicemail.

When he finds her phone hidden at home, it hits that she never went to school. Determined to find her, he heads to the school to question her friends.

Meanwhile, at the watchtower, Kainalu and Hina work to clear the beach, urging people to seek shelter. But one woman refuses to leave, appearing to be sunbathing. When they approach her, they realize she’s actually in anaphylactic shock.

They immediately call for an ambulance and do everything they can to assist her. But with the ambulance delayed on another emergency call, Kainalu knows she won’t survive without immediate medical attention.

Acting fast, he loads her into his truck and rushes her to the hospital, ultimately saving her life with his quick thinking.

Jennings eventually tracks Ocean down at the beach, surfing with her boyfriend. Furious that she would be reckless enough to surf during a tsunami warning, Jennings sends her boyfriend home and forces her into his work truck, lecturing her the entire way.

Before they can leave, one of the tourists from earlier comes running, pleading for help. His friend is unconscious in the water.

Jennings jumps into action, paddling out on his surfboard and pulling the man to shore. Once on the beach, he and Ocean perform CPR, working tirelessly to revive him before the paramedics arrive.

With Ocean following Jennings’ guidance, the man regains consciousness and is rushed to the hospital.

In that moment, saving a life alongside his daughter, Jennings realizes he has the best job in the world. And just like that, he decides not to retire after all.

As the team returns to the office for updates, tension is high. Finally, the notification comes in that the tsunami has weakened and will no longer hit the North Shore.

A wave of relief washes over them and us as we still get another week of the loveable North Shore team.
