You’re Cordially Invited Review: More For Worse Than For Better

Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon fight for a fairytale wedding day in their new Prime Video movie, You’re Cordially Invited.

The film follows two weddings that are accidentally booked on the same day at the same beautiful island venue. Faced with the reality that one of them will have to cancel, the father of one bride (Will Ferrell) and the sister of the other bride (Reese Witherspoon) do everything they can to preserve their respective wedding weekends.

Going into this film, it’s easy to feel excited and have high hopes, not just because it stars Witherspoon and Ferrell, two icons in entertainment, but also because it’s a new comedy from Nicholas Stoller, the filmmaker behind Neighbors, Zoolander 2, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and more.

Stoller has proven himself capable of delivering hilarious and memorable comedies in the past, so it’s expected the same will be said for this film. Unfortunately, this film misses the mark and quickly becomes a disappointment.

If you’re someone who loves a good, cheesy, and predictable movie, you can obviously expect some clichés, but You’re Cordially Invited is so predictable and repetitive that its 1-hour and 49-minute runtime drags on endlessly.

While comedies often follow a formula, the best ones find ways to keep things fresh and engaging. You’re Cordially Invited does the opposite. The script leans so heavily into its predictable setup and wedding chaos that it neglects character development and an engaging plot.

When viewers first see Jim (Ferrell) and Margot (Witherspoon) interact, they are at the check-in desk, where Jim discovers that the resort’s bookkeeper has passed away before writing down his booking.

As a result, Margot is also booked for the same day. Although this is tragic, Margot seizes the opportunity to threaten Jim, demanding that he leave the island or she’ll ruin him. A stunned Jim quickly fires back with sarcastic digs and threatens her family’s weekend, hoping to drive her away instead.

Unfortunately for both the viewers and the characters, neither chooses to leave. Instead, both wedding parties agree to share the venue and hold their ceremonies at different times, believing everything will go smoothly.

However, Jim and Margot refuse to let their feud end so easily. After overhearing Margot speak poorly about him and his daughter, Jim strikes first in their petty “prank war.”

This is just one example of Ferrell and Witherspoon’s characters escalating their childish, petty, and increasingly repetitive battle—each determined to sabotage the other’s wedding first. Viewers then go on to see the same thing but in the form of sabotaged speeches, bizarre karaoke performances, a planned alligator attack, a cheating rumor, relentless trash-talking, and bossiness.

This is all from two supposedly mature adults who are meant to be supporting their loved ones. Instead, Jim and Margot drag the story along by making the entire event about themselves. Their antics aren’t funny; they’re frustrating.

The film also leans into dry humor, awkward encounters, and situational comedy—common elements of wedding-themed movies. Unfortunately, this leaves little room to explore the deeper emotional layers of Margot and Jim’s dynamic.

For a film that revolves around two different weddings, one would expect a substantial focus on the couples at its center. However, the script sidelines Neve, Dixon, Jenni, and Oliver in favor of comedic hijinks that fall flat. This makes both bride-and-groom duos and their relationships feel underdeveloped or secondary to the spectacle.

Audiences may struggle to invest in their romance if their chemistry isn’t given enough screen time, making the resolution of their love story feel less satisfying.

Even at the end of the film, when Margot and Jim finally accept their feelings for each other, it feels extremely rushed because their relationship has been treated as an afterthought. The script fails to carve out moments of genuine connection between the two and struggles to create a lasting emotional impact.

Many successful wedding films, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding or The Proposal, balance chaos with character-driven storytelling, ensuring that the protagonists’ relationship remains central.

However, You’re Cordially Invited focuses too heavily on external factors—disasters, misunderstandings, and Jim and Margot’s antics—losing the emotional depth needed for viewers to become invested.

That brings up another major issue: the characters. Aside from Jimmy Tatro’s Dixon and a random cameo from Peyton Manning, none of them are likable. Poor Dixon is forced to endure the entire film as his fiancée, Neve’s (Meredith Hagner) family degrades and belittles him.

They constantly imply that he’s not good enough for their daughter and that he’s stupid just because he happens to be a stripper. But if they took even a second to get to know him, they would realize that, aside from being a stripper, he used to be a doctor.

Meanwhile, Jim watches as his daughter Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan) rushes into a marriage with her boyfriend just because they think it’s “cool.” In reality, neither of them is ready or even truly wants to go through with it.

But since communication isn’t a big part of their relationship, they go ahead with the wedding anyway, using it as an excuse to party with their horrible yet supportive friends. You’d think that, with their entire friend group being so close, at least one of them would speak up and point out that rushing into things might not be the best idea. Instead, they just scroll through TikTok and drink alcohol.

It’s easy to root for both weddings to be canceled simply because of how self-absorbed and bland the brides and other family members are. They serve no purpose in advancing the central conflict, and they receive little to no backstory or development. This lack of depth makes the characters feel unlikable and lacking in nuance.

That being said, the actors themselves are not to blame. The cast delivers solid performances with what they were given, making viewers feel strongly about how irritating their characters are.

Beyond the weak plot and frustrating characters, the biggest problem is the humor. For a film marketed as a comedy, the majority of its “jokes” fall flat.

A good comedy thrives on clever writing, relatable characters, and well-timed humor. With You’re Cordially Invited missing the marks on the first two points, it’s no shock that the humor struggles to land because it relies too heavily on excessive swearing and the degradation of its characters rather than genuine wit.

Swearing can be an effective comedic tool when used sparingly or in contrast to an otherwise serious tone. However, when profanity becomes the backbone of the humor, it often loses its impact.

It’s unclear whether they are doing it to seem “trendy” with younger generations, but it’s hard to think of the last Witherspoon or Ferrell movie that contains this much random and unnecessary swearing. Overall, it makes the dialogue feel lazy rather than sharp.

Another major flaw in the film’s humor is its reliance on degrading characters rather than crafting smart, situational comedy. Insults and humiliation can be funny in small doses, but You’re Cordially Invited crosses the line from playful teasing to outright meanness.

When characters are consistently put down, it doesn’t build humor; it creates discomfort. Viewers may feel sympathy for the targets rather than laughing along.

With Ferrell and Witherspoon’s extensive history in comedy, it’s shocking that neither manages to deliver a joke strong enough to save this film. You’re Cordially Invited is not just forgettable—it’s a letdown for both its leads and the comedy genre as a whole.

Overall, with its dull plot, dry humor, and frustrating characters, You’re Cordially Invited is one invitation you should RSVP with a firm “will not be watching again.”
