Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 4 Review: A Perfectly Good Wedding

Reviews, Superman & Lois

Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 4, “A Perfectly Good Wedding,” takes a breath to dance it out and let the bittersweetness of this final season sink in.

This fourth and final season is already almost halfway through its 10-episode run. Until now, Superman & Lois Season 4 features so much loss and heartache that it’s hard to envision a way out of it, but the only way out is through.

While everyone adjusts to a new, incredibly fragile normal, “A Perfectly Good Wedding,” written by George Kitson & Max Kronick and directed by Gregory Smith, welcomes Chrissy and Kyle back to the tune of wedding bells.

With the casting shake-up ahead of this season, Superman & Lois has less time to craft endings for some ensemble characters. Being in that creative position must be challenging, but “A Perfectly Good Wedding” handles it gracefully.

Really, this episode emphasizes how unfortunate it is that this show doesn’t have more time with these characters during this season or beyond. Superman & Lois can’t find a better way to put that into words in the story’s context than with Clark’s voiceover after the teaser.

But, to get there, “A Perfectly Good Wedding” plays with the silence that has come to accompany such devastating moments this season.

This time, a single noise breaks through, and the production is so good that it almost tricks the audience and the characters into believing it is a plan and not Clark, despite his eyes opening at the end of Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 3, “Always My Hero.” Instead, though, the silence brings joy instead of sorrow.

The reunion between Clark, Lois, Jonathan, and Jordan is special. It’s incredibly sweet and rewarding yet deeply sad, knowing that he’s only there because Sam’s 60-year-old heart is in his body. “A Perfectly Good Wedding” grapples with all those moving parts well, spotlighting Clark adjusting to his body being different.

How it does so gives Tyler Hoechlin so much to work with moving forward.

Clark opens up to Lois, but it’s visible that there’s still so much he’s holding back. While it’s clear that Clark doesn’t want his family to worry about him, it’s also evident that Clark is still working through all of this himself.

It wouldn’t do the character or the show service to bring Clark and, in turn, Superman back to life without dealing with the layered consequences.

Those complex changes will only come to Clark’s attention more often after this episode. Hacksaw Kronick may not have been able to tell anyone that Superman is back (What a great way to loop John Henry and his DOD work in, even off-screen), but the public knows that the world’s protector is alive.

Assuming that role again before the scar even heals on Clark’s chest — the same chest that wears the coat of arms for the House of El — is quite the picture. It traces lines around how fragile the lives of even fiction’s greatest heroes can be.

That acknowledgment creates a general carefulness around “A Perfectly Good Wedding.” It’s not to say Superman & Lois loses its action — Clark trains with Jon in an endearing callback to Clark doing the same with Jordan on Superman & Lois Season 3 Episode 1, “Closer.” Plus, Jon helps stop a fire for the first time.

It’s to say that this show knows it needs to do the most with the time it has, and sometimes that means giving the characters time to process all the loss and everything else. This episode realistically matches those sticky conversations with something as joyous as a (potential) wedding.

Even though Kyle asking Clark to be his Best Man doesn’t hit in the same way as Chrissy asking Lois to be her Maid of Honor, that disconnect underscores another reason why it’s a shame Superman & Lois won’t return for more seasons.

Lois and Chrissy have a strong dynamic built on genuine friendship and professional respect that spans seasons. Unfortuantely, the same isn’t true for Clark and Kyle, so “A Perfectly Good Wedding” does a lot of the heavy lifting. The best example is Kyle congratulating Clark on using Kyle’s recipe to grill BBQ.

This episode also does a lot of work with Chrissy and Kyle’s relationship, which lands as something that would unfold much more gradually if the show had that luxury. Instead, Superman & Lois introduces Chrissy’s mother to get to the heart of Chrissy and her fast-tracked relationship, and it works as well as it can.

Sofia Hasmik’s performance is strong throughout “A Perfectly Good Wedding.”

One of her best scenes is when Chrissy spins out — in her mother’s wedding dress — about losing control. Beyond being a good callback to Chrissy and Sarah’s bonding over “special gummy bears” from Superman & Lois Season 3 Episode 7, “Forever and Always,” that scene reveals so much about the character.

It’s a concise way to understand her, the expectations she feels, and the patterns he doesn’t want to continue. It’s all wrapped up in that sequence, and Superman & Lois punctuates it with a Runaway Bride homage.

“A Perfectly Good Wedding” finds a perfectly good ending to this chapter of Chrissy and Kyle’s romance by reinforcing their feelings for one another but suspending the wedding — for now. That works as well as Jordan passing his costume to Jonathan after heartfelt conversations with Sarah and Lois.

Again, Superman & Lois Season 4 is almost halfway through its final season, and it’s not wasting any time. Though some stories could use more time to succeed best, most of what this season does, like revealing that Gretchen is Cheryl Kimble, works. It’s sad that only five episodes are left, but it’s exciting to imagine what the show will do next.
