Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Kick Out

Recaps, Rescue: HI-Surf

Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 4, “Kick Out,” shows there’s no better place for a teen party than the North Shore beach. This isn’t a big surprise, considering the location is stunning.

Jenny, her boyfriend Seth, and best friend Yara decide to attend a huge get-together their friends are having on the beach. After sitting and drinking in the sun for more than a few hours, Jenny begs the group to leave and get some food.

Despite wanting to go home, her boyfriend is set on getting some photos of the scenery with Yara’s help. Of course, this is just an excuse for him and Yara to sneak off and make out somewhere they won’t get caught cheating — in a sand pit.

Their genius plan fails. The pair ends up stuck in the sand pit after it collapses on them while they’re climbing out. Yara is stuck from the waist down, and even worse, Seth’s head becomes submerged in the sand, pulling Yara out.

Jennings, Em, and Laka arrive on the scene and quickly start digging the pair out of the sand with help from the fire department.

After not having an air supply for more than seven minutes, Seth is pulled out unresponsive. Despite the team’s attempts at CPR, his throat is full of sand.

Em makes a split-second decision to give Seth a tracheostomy (also called a tracheotomy) in his neck, and a tube is inserted into the windpipe to help Seth breathe. Seth is resuscitated and is quickly rushed to the hospital alongside Yara, who has a broken collarbone.

Adding to the rescue’s success, Em’s ego is boosted even more when Sean, the firefighter who assists her, gives her flirtatious praise as a reward for her quick thinking.

Deciding to be bold, Sean asks Em to dinner, and she accepts the invitation.

I’m excited to see where this tension is going, especially since Em has been hung up on Will for so long.

Speaking of Will, despite taking the fire test and accepting everything they throw at him, he’s still sad to be leaving the job he loves. In a plot twist, he receives a call from the fire department letting him know he doesn’t get the job.

Finally, after four episodes, Laka says something smart: Will will never make the team because he has no family or friends connected to the department and is not even from the island.

Proving that a lifeguard’s job is never done, on the other side of the beach, Em and Jennings receive a call reporting that there’s been a shark attack.

This could have been avoided if the kid had told someone what he saw with his drone, but what would the North Shore be without some drama?

When Em and Jennings make it to the site of the attack, it’s made pretty clear that the extent of the attack is understated when they find a man completely missing his leg.

The man is surprisingly chill, thanks to his getting high on mushrooms before he gets on his board.

But due to the team’s quick response time and lifesaving skills, the man is quickly and safely rushed to hospital with a high chance of survival.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be an episode of Rescue: HI-Surf if we didn’t get an update on how Jennings is dealing with Zion’s death.

Deciding to make the first big step in his healing journey, Jennings tries to attend the fundraiser Zion’s mother (his sister) is throwing.

Still blaming him for Zion’s death, Jennings’s sister tells him he’s not welcome at the event, claiming that Zion would still be alive if Jennings hadn’t encouraged his dream of becoming a lifeguard like his uncle.

Despite receiving nothing but hostility from his sister, the lecture helps him realize that he’s being way too hard on himself over Zion’s death.

This inspires him to visit the family that is suing him and his team over their child’s accident on the beach. Even though the child’s father isn’t happy to see Jennings, he hears him out.

Jennings asks him to drop the lawsuit and explains that he knows how it feels to have a child that you care about go through such a near-death experience and how you want to blame everyone else so you don’t have to deal with the pain of admitting that, as a parent, you weren’t there for them.

Realizing that he’s pushing his anger and guilt onto Jennings and his team (who saved his son’s life), he and his family decide to drop the lawsuit against the North Shore team.
