Preview — 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 2: Athena Must Fly and Land a Plane with a Hole in It
9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 2, “When the Boeing Gets Tough…,” continues the three-part, bee-centric premiere with a sky-high twist.
9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 1, “Buzzkill,” eventually reveals that the light plane from the beginning of the episode crashes into a passenger plan, putting a massive hole in the side of it. The impact knocks out the pilots and endangers the passengers, including Athena and the prisoner she’s transporting, Dennis Jenkins.
So, Athena must fly and land the plane. If anyone can do that without training, it’s Athena Grant-Nash, which is probably why Bobby Nash is not shocked when he learns his wife is flying the plane.

The photos for “When the Boeing Gets Tough…” stay in the air — far away from the 118. This episode may work backward to fill in the gaps from “Buzzkill.” It could get to know the passengers, including a high school volleyball team and a woman with a dog.
This episode will also reintroduce some familiar supporting faces at air traffic control. Sarah Chaney and Tiffany C. Adams last appeared on 9-1-1 Season 5 Episode 1, “Panic,” in September 2021. Then, the supervisor and employees dealt with ransomware threats that caused the tower to experience a system failure.
Now, 22 million killer bees have caused a plane crash, and the air traffic control team will have to guide Athena to land the plane safely. The 9-1-1 promo teases that the 118 may meet Athena and the other passengers wherever she lands the plane. But there’s a lot that will likely happen before then. It is 9-1-1, after all.
