Reviews

Agatha All Along Season 1 Episode 6, “Familiar By Thy Side,” revealed much more of Joe Locke’s character and where he came from. The connective tissue expertly links the mysterious Teen, also known as Billy, to the series WandaVision.

Many fan theories suggest Teen is Billy Maximoff, one of Wanda’s kids that she manifested during her time in Westview. It turned out to be true, and now we get to see more of that backstory and how Billy teamed up with Agatha to get to the Witches’ Road.

This episode is clearly all Joe Locke, as it’s solely his performance that helps us connect to him as his character goes through some big changes.

It is great to see the comics were a great source of inspiration to develop Billy’s origins for the show and how he came into the body of William Kaplan, the original person whose body Billy inhabits.

Locke has the task of portraying two very different people, and he pulls it off well.

As William Kaplan, we see him going through a Bar Mitzvah with his parents and living life as a teenager for the first time. His life does get cut short after Wanda’s hex over Westview falls and causes a car accident. However, he reawakens as Billy, whose soul has found William’s body.

What’s fascinating is how the episode establishes connections, showing how each coven member has interacted with William previously. First is Patti LuPone’s Lilia, who read William’s palm for his reading and told him he has two lifelines. It was revealed that she put the sigil on him, but the reason behind that is still a mystery.

Officer Alice is also first on the scene where the car accident occurred, explaining how she found Agatha’s house earlier this season. There’s even a glimpse of Jennifer when we see Billy on his computer!

One of the biggest surprises is seeing the appearance of Evan Peters, who reprises his role as Ralph Boner from WandaVision.

He is more than a cameo; he gives Billy more information on what went down in Westview when the kid tries to find answers about who he is and his connection to the incident in that town.

It is great to see Evans as Ralph after what happened to him, still reeling from what transpired.

He also helps establish why Billy wants to get into Witches’ Road. He is searching for his twin brother Tommy, which opens another can of worms in the growing world of the MCU. It’ll be interesting to see if we get to see both brothers reunite, whether it’s on this show or elsewhere.

Now that Agatha has figured out who Billy is, there will be some animosity between these two.

This dynamic will be drastically different, knowing that Billy doesn’t trust Agatha entirely and that his innocent act around her was all a ruse to get to the Witches’ Road. Let’s see if he follows down the same path as his mother, as his powers can be uncontrollable under duress.

This week’s Agatha All Along installment offers some tantalizing answers as we finally learn more about Billy’s backstory.

It is great to see that Locke has all this material to work with. It makes his character more relatable than in previous episodes.

With a surprise cameo and more revelations, it’ll be interesting to see where this goes as we get into the final three episodes.
