Wynonna Earp: Vengeance: Dom Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell Discuss the Evolution of Wayhaught | San Diego Comic-Con
It wouldn’t be a Wynonna Earp reunion without Wayhaught!
Dom Provost-Chalkley (Wavery Earp) and Katherine Barrell (Nicole Haught) spoke with reporters during a roundtable interview at San Diego Comic-Con about Tubi’s new special, Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.
The two actors delved into the importance of showing long-term LGBTQ+ relationships on screen and how they hope the special will welcome new fans into the Wynonna Earp family when the time comes. (You can watch the full interview below.)

“It is the fast-paced, adventurous ride of a Wynonna adventure. It’s really just everything that you know and love about Wynonna packed into this 90-minute special. Expect the unexpected,” Provost-Chalkley teased.
“We wanted it to also be a gateway drug for new fans. You know, the fandom was so ready and so open. And we were so excited for the fans that are going to find it through Tubi,” Barrell explained. “That’s a lot of new people that we hope will come to the Wynonna fandom and find the family that we’ve all grown so fond of.”
With hopes the special will welcome new fans to the fold, this is what Barrell had to say about revisiting Purgatory for additional adventures after the special:
“I don’t think anything’s off the table,” Barrell admitted. “To be very blunt, we need people to watch the special, and we need them to watch it over and over again — twice, or ten times. If everyone can watch it ten times, that would really help.”

Provost-Chalkley and Barrell promise more of the Wayhaught we know and love, with a little more of their personal journeys infused into this iteration.
For Provost-Chalkley, it was all about lending more of their own Queer journey to telling an authentic story.
“I have done a lot of internal growth work and have become more of an authentic representation of my Queer self. And so I was so lucky that Emily [Andras] was like, ‘Yeah, let’s put it all in. Let’s not try to bring you back to a different version of yourself. Let’s allow Waverly to evolve in the way that you have while still retaining her essence,'” they explained.
“We’re not going to start making Waverly nonbinary or something like that. She’s very much still her beautiful, girly self. But we can have a cute little pixie cut, and we can enjoy the fact that she’s gone on that journey alongside Nicole.”
As for Barrell, the story of this found family means even more to her now that she has started her own family. ” I had my first child in that time in between, and I was pregnant with my second when we shot. So like, I had just gone through a real transformation of becoming a parent,” she recalled.
“I had been so supported by my Wynonna Earp family through that massive life change — everyone took such good care of me and was checking in on me. I just felt so safe. And it was a really special thing because you realize protection and family are so important; it’s like really the only thing that matters, and this is my found family. They were so there for me and so loving.”

Wynonna Earp has given us something few shows with LGBTQ+ couples do: a happy ending. However, the duo agrees there still isn’t enough representation in media for long-term relationships, and they are excited to help change that.
“We watched the show when we first came out, and with everything going on with Clexa and the ‘Bury Your Gays’ trope, we were talking about it a lot. And then — things got really good and very forward-moving. But we have had a bit of a decline. So, it just reconfirms to me that we still need to continue pushing, not take our foot off the gas for better representation, and continue those stories,” Barrell revealed.
“Also, I just love Wayhaught,” she added.
“How often do we get to see characters for ten years and a love story over a long time? That’s what makes Wayhaught so unique and beautiful — we’re seeing a settled couple that has been together for a long time. And like, what does that look like? Because there’s not a lot of that. So I think that’s quite beautiful.”

Provost-Chalkley acknowledged that the two characters have had their “ups and downs,” but “there is something so powerful about seeing two people who are so committed to one another.”
Additionally, they are excited to see fan reactions to the “evolution” of this romance.
“Emily treats our relationship like a heterosexual relationship, and that’s just so unique and special. I really hope that the fans just love seeing Wayhaught back on their screens, with all of our evolutions and meeting them where they’re at now.”
