Preview — Pachinko Season 2: WWII Threatens The Family’s Survival
Apple TV+’s sprawling multi-generation drama Pachinko returns for a second season after a hiatus of over two years.
The series is based on Min Jin Lee’s New York Times best-seller of the same name. It follows the life of a young woman named Sunja, born in 1910 in Korea while Japan occupied the country.

Unlike the book, which tells a linear story, the series alternates between Sunja’s early life and her later life in the late 1980s.
Season 1 of Pachinko received 11 international awards, including a Peabody Award, an American Film Institute Award, a Critics Choice Award, and a Gotham Independent Film Award.
It saw a pregnant and unwed Sunja marry a Korean minister from Japan staying at her family’s lodging house. The minister not only offers to marry her but also to raise her child as his own.
She moves with him to Japan, where she faces bigotry, financial hardships, and family tragedies.
The portion of the season, set in the 80s, focuses on Sunja’s grandson, Solomon’s, efforts to climb the corporate ladder and his relationship with a troubled childhood friend while also exploring Sunja’s nostalgia for her life in Korea.
Season 2 will continue the move between two time periods following Sunja’s story through World War II and Solomon’s efforts to revive his career after it imploded during Season 1.

Season description: In season two, parallel stories pick up in Osaka in 1945, where Sunja is forced to make dangerous decisions for her family’s survival during World War II, and in Tokyo in 1989, where Solomon explores new, humble beginnings.
