Peacock released an exclusive behind-the-action featurette of the Gladiator epic at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
The show’s panel about the making of Those About to Die kicked off in Ballroom 20 on Thursday, July 25, with executive producer and director Roland Emmerich and stars Iwan Rheon, Sara Martins, Moe Hashim, Jojo Macari, Dimitri Leonidas, and Gabriella Pession.

The Peacock series, “set in the corrupt world of the spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition, exploring a side of ancient Rome never before told — the dirty business of entertaining the masses, giving the mob what they want most…blood and sport,” debuted on Thursday, July 18, with a 10-episode season.
Now, fans can take a behind-the-scenes look at Those About to Die, where the cast and crew discuss everything from the epic technology that makes immersing themselves in the Roman Empire easier for the cast to the detailed costumes that help the ensemble embrace their roles.
Writer and director Roland Emmerich discusses the desire to make a project about the Roman Empire and sports, so this Peacock series is the best of both worlds. Meanwhile, Tom Hughes, who plays Titus Flavianus, says Those About to Die‘s “attention to detail is thrilling.”
The featurette delves into VFX, stunt work, the practicality of working with real horses, and much more.

After watching that, San Diego Comic-Con has even more excitement for fans of Those About to Die. As previously reported, SDCC 2024 has a Those About to Die: The Chariot Race activation that will be open for the duration of the convention (Thursday, July 25, to Sunday, July 28).
The activation allows guests to “Step inside the betting tavern, join one of the coveted factions, and experience the adrenaline thrill of the chariot race itself.” Those About to Die: The Chariot Race promises to “bring the ancient “Circus Maximus” to life right in the Gaslamp District.”
Fans “will be divided into the 5 factions from the show and given the chance to whip a pair of reins to power their team’s chariot to victory.”
For those who have not pre-registered, there will be a standby line with limited entrance availability at 170 Sixth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101.
