Guy Ritchie to Direct ‘Young Sherlock’ Series Starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin
Guy Ritchie will return to the Sherlock Holmes universe with a new prequel series, Young Sherlock, for Prime Video starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin.
The streamer announced that Inspirational Entertainment and Motive Pictures’ Young Sherlock will be an eight-episode origin story of the world’s most famous detective, inspired by Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes book series.
Richie is set to direct and executive produce, with writer and executive producer Matthew Parkhill as showrunner. Simon Kelton, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Maxwell, Dhana Gilbert, Colin Wilson, and Marc Resteghini also executive produce. Harriet Creelman serves as a co-executive producer on Young Sherlock.

Tiffin, who previously worked with Ritchie on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, will star as 19-year-old Holmes.
The character is described as “disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University, which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock unravels a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.”
“In Young Sherlock, we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before. We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love,” Richie said in a statement.
The director previously helmed 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which starred Roberty Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
Young Sherlock was initially conceived by Kelton and packaged with Atkinson, then partnered with Motive, Gilbert, and Resteghini, who developed the series and brought it to Amazon MGM Studios. Gilbert and Resteghini have overall deals there.

“This exciting, new chapter about one of the world’s best-known literary characters, will delight our global customers with its captivating storytelling” Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios, said.
“With the brilliant creative team, led by Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill, we will explore untold mysteries of how young Sherlock found his way to a life of truth-seeking,” Sanders added.
Prime Video isn’t the only network to order a series inspired by Sherlock Holmes.
In February, The CW announced that David Thewlis would star in Sherlock & Daughter. CBS recently green-lit the medical drama Watson, about the detective’s famous sidekick, Dr. John Watson, played by Morris Chestnut. Both series are slated to air during the 2024/2025 programming season.
