Morris Chestnut is the iconic Dr. John Watson on Watson.

CBS announced a straight-to-series order for the new medical drama, with its premiere slated for the 2024/2025 programming season.

Watson follows a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he resumes his career solving medical mysteries a year after the death of his friend and partner, Sherlock Holmes. That’s right; Holmes died at the hands of Moriarty prior to the events of Watson.

Chestnut’s role as the infamous character comes after another recent run on a medical drama. The actor starred as the neurosurgeon Dr. Barrett Cain on Seasons 3 and 4 of FOX’s The Resident. Chestnut debuted on The Resident Season 3 Episode 1, “From the Ashes,” in 2019.

Now, Chestnut will star in and executive produce Watson. Craig Sweeny; Shäron Moalem MD, PhD; and Aaron Kaplan and Brian Morewitz for Kapital Entertainment also executive produce the CBS series.

Produced by CBS Studios, the series is described as “a medical show with a strong investigative spine.” Larry Teng will executive produce and direct Watson‘s first episode.
