Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 7 Review: Step on a Crack and Break Your Mother’s Back

Chicago Med, Reviews

We must applaud Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 7, “Step on a Crack and Break Your Mother’s Back,” for having dissolved any traces of a love triangle between Archer, Asher, and Ripley in the best way possible.

When hints of a love triangle appeared, viewers were mostly concerned that Archer and Asher’s friendship, which had helped both characters grow and leave behind some very toxic traits, would be ruined. Luckily, the episode proves that this friendship isn’t going anywhere.

On the contrary, they are there to encourage one another to go after the person they truly like.

By working on a case together, Archer and Asher realize they shouldn’t let their fears make them miss out on something that could be great.

Archer points out Asher’s feelings for Ripley by joking about passing him a note during recess. Humor is his way of talking about more important subjects and showing her he cares. It works for the kind of friendship they have.

Opposite to him, Asher goes straight to the point by telling him he shouldn’t be afraid to ask Margo out just because she is his son’s boss. If there is one thing Sean has proven throughout his episodes on Chicago Med, it is that all he wants is his father’s happiness.

In the end, both doctors go after the person they like and take a chance at what could be something great, pushing their fears aside. Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 7, “Step on a Crack and Break Your Mother’s Back,” proves these two characters work better as friends than love interests.

Goodwin’s Personal Life
Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 7, Dominic Raines as Dr. Crockett Marcel stands with his back to the camera, and his right arm extended, addressing S. Epatha Merkerson as Sharon Goodwin who is looking concerned toward something out of frame.

The moment Goodwin started dating one of her colleagues, we knew things would get complicated at one point or another. Lo and behold, “Step on a Crack and Break Your Mother’s Back” proves us right.

However, it does surprise us that Marcel accuses her of being biased. He is usually the more professional and rule-abiding doctor, so he rarely challenges authority as he does on this episode.

We can’t say he is wrong. Goodwin goes with what her professional experience is telling her, but if her new boyfriend is wrong, shouldn’t she have given Marcel a chance?

Luckily, she realizes this in time to speak to Washington before it is too late. It does seem their relationship comes into play during this conversation as she knows what to tell him and how to cope with his emotions. That is when their personal relationship becomes an advantage.

If things continue down this road, we are sure this won’t be the only time in which someone calls her out for dating a colleague. It shouldn’t be a problem as long as Goodwin remains unbiased.

The Perfect Team
Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 7, Oliver Platt as Dr. Daniel Charles stands with his back mostly to the camera, extending his hand to an elderly female patient while Luke Mitchell as Dr. Mitch Ripley looks at him with concern on his face.

A lot can be said about Ripley since joining Chicago Med, but the truth is that he is growing as a person and a doctor. In the past, he would have gone against the patient’s wishes and fought to do things his way.

This time, he listens to the patient and Charles to find a better way to treat him. Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 7, “Step on a Crack and Break Your Mother’s Back,” shows that when leaving the past behind, Charles and Ripley are the perfect team.

Their knowledge, passion, and dedication to patients work perfectly together as they try to save the patient’s life without jeopardizing his feelings and beliefs.

Hopefully, these two will continue to work together closely. It seems teaming up with Charles is helping heal Ripley’s wounds.

Something that stands out on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 7, “Step on a Crack and Break Your Mother’s Back,” is the way Charles talks about OCD. He takes the time to explain what it is and how others usually see it.

By talking about it, not only is he explaining the symptoms and how debilitating this diagnosis can be, but he is also bringing awareness to a mental illness that is usually treated as a joke.

The truth is that Chicago Med has done a great job at thoroughly explaining the diagnoses it treats and bringing awareness to different kinds of illnesses that are usually disregarded or treated as taboo.

Hopefully, the remainder of Chicago Med Season 9 will continue down this road because it has been one of the show’s best seasons so far.
