Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 6 Review: I Told Myself That I Was Done With You

Chicago Med, Reviews

One thing Chicago Med has been doing this season is delivering consistently high-quality episodes. The show seems to be at the top of its game, and Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 6, “I Told Myself That I Was Done With You,” is yet another perfect example.

Not only does the show come up with outstanding cases that keep us entertained and engaged, but Chicago Med also intertwines the doctors’ personal lives with their professional day-to-day activities.

While Maggie and Goodwin deal with their ex-husbands differently, Ripley must face his past, which isn’t as easy as it seems. Two of these three storylines include a very supportive Charles.

Goodwin and Bert’s New Reality

After having pushed her ex-husband to figure out what is going on with him, Goodwin is met with his distance. She is trying to make herself available to him, but Bert pushes her away, which is to be expected after he finds out his diagnosis.

However, we are surprised that she is still Bert’s emergency contact. Even though he doesn’t want her interfering in his life, she is still the person he trusts the most, divorced or not.

Before Goodwin has her conversation with Charles, it is very telling that she is worried about Bert’s diagnosis because she walks around holding the informative pamphlets the doctor gave her as if she weren’t a trained nurse and the head of the hospital. She is relying on those papers to give her the support she needs after the shock.

Even if we’re slowly learning more about Goodwin’s personal life, the most consistent aspect of her life has been her friendship with Charles, and this shines through once more on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 6, “I Told Myself That I Was Done With You,” as she finds herself in his office discussing what scares her of Bert’s diagnosis.

He also shows up at Bert’s house with her when they’re worried he might have done something drastic.

Bert’s case is clearly just getting started and will probably have repercussions on Goodwin’s life and her new relationship all throughout Chicago Med Season 9. It’ll be interesting to see how she finds (or not) a balance between running a hospital, taking care of Bert, and allowing herself to enjoy her new relationship.

Ripley’s Past

As hard as Ripley has tried to run away from his past, it keeps catching up with him. It usually comes in the form of Charles, who knows who he used to be and the kind of trouble he used to get into. However, on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 6, “I Told Myself That I Was Done With You,” it comes in the shape of an old friend.

Sully represents exactly who Ripley used to be. He was a troublesome man who had issues with the law and used to steal candy when he was a kid. But he has fought really hard to get away from that — something Sully points out several times by talking about his white coat and fancy job.

As much as he tries to help his friend, Sully insists on getting out of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center without talking to the oncologist. However, Ripley refuses to acknowledge this, and Charles makes him and the audience wonder if he’d react the same way if he didn’t personally know his patient.

Things don’t go as planned, and Ripley’s past comes out in full force as the two men get into a physical fight in the middle of the ED. By the time security separates them (under the watchful eye of Charles), it is clear that Ripley is ashamed he let the worst of him win.

Not surprisingly, Charles and Ripley have yet another emotional moment in the locker room. Charles shows Ripley that Sully had shown up looking for a friend, not a doctor. Ripley should have forgotten about his medical training for a second and be the friend he used to be.

Ultimately, he shows up at a bar and behaves like the friend Sully needs. But this entire case helps us understand Ripley better and continues to add to the list of reasons why he is becoming a fan-favorite character.

Maggie’s Time to Move Forward

When Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 6, “I Told Myself That I Was Done With You,” starts, we find out Maggie has been sleeping in the ED and avoiding going home at all costs. It is clear that she is unable to move on from her divorce.

The beauty of Chicago Med is that the show always finds a way to connect the cases the doctors and nurses are working on with their personal lives. This time around, Maggie has a special connection with the mom of the kid she and Archer are helping.

While Caleb’s mom is having difficulty adjusting to their new reality and letting go of what happened to her son, Maggie realizes she is holding on just as stubbornly to her past. Both women are trying to create a new normal that doesn’t actually exist.

However, because her story resonates with Caleb’s mom, she can help her see that the best thing for her son would be to trust Archer. She sees the mom trying to hold on to what seems familiar in a world that has been turned upside down. Exactly what she is doing while staying in the ED (her comfort zone) instead of going home to an empty house.

In the end, Caleb’s mother thanks Maggie for pushing her to go forward with the surgery which results in Maggie deciding to go home that night. Hopefully, she will continue to move forward, and her storyline for the remainder of Chicago Med Season 9 won’t revolve around her divorce.

Zola in Trouble…Again
Chicago Med – Season 9

Raise your hand if you are tired of watching Zola continuously getting in trouble. With Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 6, “I Told Myself That I Was Done With You,” hopefully, she will learn to focus on the positive and stop chasing after impossibles.

After fighting to take a medication off the hospital rotation on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 5, “I Make a Promise, I Will Never Leave You,” Zola gets the desired results. However, Archer points out it is probably not the best result as the new medication is more expensive and will fall on the patients instead of insurance.

Later, she discovers a hospital board member manufactures this medication. She seems to want to fight this decision as unethical, but Marcel stops her.

Marcel and Zola seem to continue to butt heads, but it is he who makes her realize that she should be focusing on the good stuff. She saves help a woman’s life and instead thinks about the next fight she could pick.

Even though she has come to occupy Will Halstead’s savior spot, it is getting exhausting. Will knew when to stop picking fights, but Zola seems to be unstoppable. Hopefully, she will stop with her impulses and focus more on being the best doctor possible.

Zola’s storyline might be becoming a little bit repetitive, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that Chicago Med delivers great episodes every week.

With only six episodes out this far, we hope the show can keep up with its quality. Chicago Med Season 9 has been one of the strongest seasons the show has had, giving us a better look at the doctors’ and nurses’ lives.
