Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 4 Review: These Are Not the Droids You Are Looking For

Chicago Med, Reviews

Things get personal in the ED for more than one doctor on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 4, “These Are Not the Droids You Are Looking For.”

If viewers tuned in this week for the medical cases, those were mostly pushed to the back burner. Instead, the lives of these doctors became the focal point of the episode.

And, in all honesty, it worked perfectly. After all, these are the characters that keep the show going.

Asher: Love and Pics

On Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 3, “What Happens in the Dark Always Comes to Light,” Asher’s personal life intertwined with her professional life, and this happens once more on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 4, “These Are Not the Droids You Are Looking For.”

Jokingly, Archer asks if she’s had to deliver the baby of this new man she’s talking to. Even though the answer is no, that didn’t stop him from ending up in the ED.

After receiving an unsolicited photo and having to redirect her date to Ripley for a checkup, Asher seems to once again be giving up on dating apps.

However, when Cuevas mentions that she has plenty of opportunities, the camera pans to Ripley walking by. Could this be another sign? Will Ripley be her new love interest?

It seems the show might be going down that road since Asher established she and Archer are bosom buddies. This could be the show’s way of shutting down any possibilities of a relationship between the two.

Or it is possibly setting up a love triangle with Ripley.

Zola’s Past

To nobody’s surprise, Zola is once again in trouble for trying to help a patient outside of the bureaucratic road. Even though Maggie tries to teach her a way to do things without fraud, cheating, or lying, the young resident still gets in trouble.

Instead of firing her, Archer enrolls her in an ethics class, hoping this will keep her out of trouble. However, after learning about her past, we know Zola won’t change her ways any time soon.

Unlike Halstead, who seemed to want to help people because he was against the injustices of the system, Zola does so because someone from her past died due to insurance negligence.

Before reprimanding her or getting mad at her, Maggie takes the time to ask Zola who has motivated her to be the way she is. And thanks to this, we, as the audience, get a better understanding of who she is.

Hopefully, we will get to know her better, and her storyline won’t always narrow her down to being a rule-breaker.

Goodwin’s Family

If learning about Goodwin’s new love wasn’t enough, Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 4, “These Are Not the Droids You Are Looking For,” brings her daughter, grandson, and ex-husband to the ED.

As per usual on Chicago Med, nothing is what it seems. What builds up to be a case about her grandson quickly turns into a case involving her ex-husband.

Even though she brushes it off as her ex being quirky and clumsy, as always, her daughter soon discovers something else is going on with her dad. And it becomes clear that Goodwin will be heavily involved in whatever is going on.

So we wonder, how will this affect her new relationship?

In the elevator, she isn’t ready to introduce her current man to her ex to avoid things being awkward. What will she do now that her ex needs her help?

It seems like after years of keeping her personal and professional lives separated, Goodwin won’t be able to do this for much longer.

New Doctor or New Love Interest?

A perfect example of these doctors and their personal lives being quite present in the ED is Marcel and Johnson discussing the menu of their upcoming get-together.

But this also serves as the perfect introduction for Johnson. He tells Maggie he’ll be spending a lot more time in the ED and for the audience to trust him it helps to know he has friends working there.

However, we quickly start to suspect his introduction comes as a possible new love interest for Maggie. Is this too soon after her divorce?

It could be, but there are still signs that something might happen.

First, when she sees him playing with the kids in the room to distract them from what’s going on. And secondly, when she says she might show up to the get-together.

Marcel mentions her divorce to Johnson. Will this stop him from pursuing anything? Or does it tell him she’s single, and he’ll go after her?

Chicago Med has heavily charged with medical cases episodes, but Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 4, “These Are Not the Droids You Are Looking For,” isn’t one of them.

Combining different kinds of episodes is what keeps the audience interested in the show. It is what allows us to care about the characters and also see them do what they’re good at.

Hopefully, the season will continue to deliver both kinds of episodes.
