Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 3 Review: What Happens in the Dark Always Comes to Light

Chicago Med, Reviews

From the beginning of Chicago Med, the show has tackled real-life issues that affect patients. Whether it is struggling with insurance, lack of attention to their symptoms, or medication they can’t find, the show has always done its best to portray the different difficulties patients face.

On Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 3, “What Happens in the Dark Always Comes to Light,” they shine a light on how hard it can be for insurance companies to approve certain procedures. In this case, the insurance company claims Vincent’s surgery isn’t a life-or-death situation.

But in order to get what the patient deserves, Zola goes the unorthodox route, butting heads with Marcel once more.

Marcel’s first appearance on this episode reveals to us that he is now a member of the board. However, for Zola, this means he is popular with “the suits” because he will do as they tell.

This small interaction and their argument over “sexy surgery” make us feel like something else is brewing between the two doctors. Following Marcel’s history, there are two options.

The first option is they will become rivals. Just like with Halstead, Marcel and Zola will continue to argue with each other without ever seeing eye-to-eye.

The second option is they will fall in love. The constant arguing and going to war over patients will lead to them realizing they have feelings for one another.

It is still too soon to tell, but it is refreshing to see a doctor fight so strongly for patients’ rights.

One thing Chicago Med will always do is combine the cases with the personal lives of the doctors. But one character whose personal life we haven’t really dived into in a long time is Sharon Goodwin.

To our surprise, this episode reveals she is now dating the chief of oncology. When the relationship is introduced, we also find out Goodwin hasn’t quite made up her mind about telling their colleagues about their relationship.

Even though she says it is because she has always tried to keep her professional life and her romantic life separate, we have a feeling she might be doubting it because of her position.

She is a woman in charge, and being open about her personal life might make others undermine her. However, she chooses to come clean about their relationship because she knows it is what she deserves and what her partner deserves as well.

Hopefully, this won’t backfire, and her role in the hospital won’t be questioned.

Contrary to Goodwin, Asher’s personal life has been discussed on the show quite often. Not only have we had an insight into her addiction, but we have known her different partners.

The last few episodes of Chicago Med Season 8 and the first episodes of Chicago Med Season 9 made us feel as if Archer was going to be Asher’s next partner. But Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 3, “What Happens in the Dark Always Comes to Light,” changes that.

Asher is now going on dates, but we can tell it won’t go the way she expects.

The moment her date says he has to go because he has to wake up early, we know he is lying about something. His attitude tells us he might not be the man he introduced himself to be.

Shortly after, we find out he is married. When his wife shows up at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center and says she is pregnant, it becomes obvious Asher will be her doctor.

Whether she likes it or not, her personal and professional lives become one and she cannot escape her actions of the night before even though she hadn’t known her date was married.

Even if there is so much drama between her and her date, it seems as if this new episode of Chicago Med is setting up the mood for Asher and Ripley to have a relationship.

We get this feeling because there are different moments throughout the episode that have pushed them to be together. Firstly, Ripley shows up at the same bar and together they save the life of another couple.

Secondly, when Asher asks the nurse to grab another doctor (“Whoever is available”), it is Ripley who shows up. One way or another the different cases keep intertwining their lives.

Lastly, as they are saying goodnight, Asher confirms she is done with the dating apps and Ripley mentions it’s good so she doesn’t miss meeting someone in real life. Is that a hint?

Is he trying to tell her he is interested?

With Archer recovering from his transplant, Ripley has more room to come close to Archer. However, one wonders if this will cause an issue between the doctors. Could this turn into a love triangle?

The one character who must always be highlighted on Chicago Med is Charles. On every episode, his dedication to his patients is very obvious.

No matter the odds or how difficult the case may be, he never gives up on his patients. It is this dedication that makes him one of the best doctors on the show.

Stray Observations
  • Maggie is sad about her divorce, so hopefully this won’t be the last we will see of Ben.
  • Did Goodwin push her date back so she could meet Maggie for her scan?
  • The baby that is used for the childbirth is way older than a newborn and it doesn’t match with the very fake baby doll that is used in later scenes.
