The Diplomat Season 2 Adds Allison Janney

From press secretary to VP, Allison Janney is returning to Washington.

Instead of reprising the iconic press secretary C.J. Cregg on The West Wing, the acclaimed actress will step back into the Oval Office on Netflix’s dramatic thriller The Diplomat.

Variety exclusively reported that Janney will appear in a guest starring role as Vice President Grace Penn. The character was mentioned throughout The Diplomat Season 1 but never seen.

With this role, Netflix’s TUDUM confirms that Janney will reunite with The Diplomat‘s creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn, who also worked on The West Wing.

Janney joins Keri Russell, who returns as the titular character Kate Wyler. The drama also stars Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. Season 1’s guest stars included Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, T’Nia Miller, and Miguel Sandoval.

The Diplomat debuted its first season in April 2023. The eight-episode season was filmed in London, the Cotswolds, and Paris. Netflix renewed the series for a sophomore season in May 2023.

“I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you, Netflix for giving us another shot,” Keri Russell said about The Diplomat‘s renewal.

Russell was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards for her performance as Kate.

The Diplomat‘s synopsis reads as follows:

Kate Wyler is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler.

Alongside Cahn, Janice Williams, Keri Russell, and Simon Cellan Jones (Episodes 1 and 2) executive produce the series. Don Toland produces.

Any specific details about the plot for The Diplomat Season 2 are as secret as the season’s premiere date.
