The Diplomat Renewed for Season 2 on Netflix
Fans of the Keri Russell-led series The Diplomat can breathe a sigh of relief.
Just over a week after its debut on April 20th, Netflix renewed the political drama for a second season, per TV Line.
On the series, Russell, who also acts as an executive producer, stars as Kate Wyler, a foreign service officer who unexpectedly finds herself appointed ambassador to the UK after years of serving in crisis zones.

Created by Debora Cahn, whose previous work includes The West Wing and Homeland, The Diplomat debuted at number 1 on Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 TV English list, according to Deadline. It also boasts 57.48 million hours viewed in its first weekend and has appeared in the Top 10 in 86 countries.
“We had such a great time making The Diplomat,” Cahn said in a statement. “And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it. We’re so glad we get to do it again!”
Also chiming in on the renewal, Russell thanked Netflix saying, “I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you, Netflix for giving us another shot.”

While the renewal itself isn’t surprising, given the series’ success, the massive cliffhanger at the end of Season 1 makes it especially welcomed news, a fact not lost on Netflix’s VP of Drama Series Jinny Howe.
“Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat‘s gripping and propulsive drama and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance,” Howe said in a statement.
She added, “After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora, [fellow EP] Janice Williams, and Keri have in store for Season 2.”
In addition to Russell, The Diplomat also stars Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh.
