All Rise, Reviews

As we near the end of this show, it seems more determined than ever to pack as much as possible into a single episode. That leaves us with a lot of impactful moments on All Rise Season 3 Episode 15, “Say Something.”

After everything she’s had to handle this season, Lola still can’t catch a break; her work loaded with an emotionally grueling case, an attack generated through AI imagery, and at least one moment that should pointedly not be left to her to handle.

In Courtroom 802, Emily is representing a man who shoved a boy bullying his daughter, accidentally sending him into a coma when the young teenager hit his head, but only after Timothy had tormented the girl to the point she once attempted suicide.

It’s the kind of case that’s riddled with pain on all sides, leaving no true right answer. The most overpowering feeling is desperation for Jim to accept the deal the prosecution offers as he remains determined to stand by his defense of his daughter.

Eventually he does accept after an impassioned speech by Lola, and the boy he shoved shows early signs of a full recovery. The ending is likely too perfect to be realistic, but it’s been a while since a case has torn us this much, and I’ll take a little idealism.

Lola has even more pressing matters to handle outside the trial. Matters like photos that show her being intimate with Dre. They may be poorly made fakes, but that won’t stop either her political enemies or her husband from seeing them.

In a true case of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” (at least temporarily), she and Sherri must turn to the very David Sanders who turned their lives upside down to investigate. Sherri in particular makes her feelings about the situation amusingly clear.

Sanders does expose the culprit in due time, making the whole matter a bit of a nonstarter, but it presses another necessary conversation between Lola and Robin—all the more so as the FBI is trying to lure Robin away from LA again.

Then there’s the case Amy presents to an appeals court, including Judge Benner(!) and two of her peers. A religious institution presses a whitewashed slate of history and Lisa soon takes the matter to the most prominent Black woman she knows.

Her immediate brushing off of the very opinion she asks for is a bit heavy-handed, but it’s also realistic and painfully common. Forced to do the work that’s put on the shoulders of Black people for generations, Lola tells her friend a few hard truths.

Thankfully, Lisa responds as well as she can, taking the time to educate and better herself as an ally. Along she way, she sides with Amy in court, both giving another win, and writing a decision that presses the importance of teaching all parts of history.

There are also some plots in the episode that don’t directly involve Lola. Sadly, one of them is confirmation that the matter of having kids could be a roadblock for Luke and Emily. They make no decisions just yet, but the ones that loom are worrying.

Finally, a couple more lighthearted moments offer viewers a break from everything else: Sara goes on what winds up being a real date with Gabriel, and Mark and Luke head out an disastrous and yet still ultimately enjoyable road trip.

Between seeing Sara, who deserves the world, so happy, and touching on a friendship we haven’t seen much of for at least a season, we are reminded of the many things that make this show great—even when all of them are crammed into one hour.
