Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Episode 4 Review: The White Room

Only Murders in the Building, Reviews

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.

Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Episode 4, “The White Room,” finally puts our trio together to do a bit of snooping.

I’ve really missed Charles, Mabel, and Oliver working together, even though Oliver is mainly still focused on the play and only suggesting potential murderers who wouldn’t ruin things too much if they got arrested.

We’re taking baby steps here, but it’s so nice to see Oliver interacting with Mabel and Charles more. He even has time to give Charles some much-needed advice about his relationship and stress levels.

“The White Room” strikes a good balance between giving us moments between those three while also allowing each character to have their own separate storyline going.

Cinda Canning is back!

Her return and her desire to work with Mabel is an unexpected development. I honestly thought Cinda would just be around for one season and then never reappear, but Only Murders in the Building does have a habit of keeping people around longer than expected — Teddy Dimas, for instance.

Cinda not only reappears to update us on her new fake self-help image, but she offers Mabel a job working with her on a true-crime podcast. Mabel does need a job, as her apartment search makes clear, and it’s not as if her partners in crime-podcasting are taking their current case seriously.

I can’t see Mabel and Cinda working well together, can you? Only Murders in the Building Season 2 didn’t paint Cinda in the best of light as far as being a boss, and while Mabel won’t go as far as to frame Cinda for murder, she won’t be pushed around by Cinda.

While it’s unlikely Mabel will actually take Cinda up on the offer, it could be the push Charles and Oliver need to spend more time with Mabel.

She’s expressed that she feels left out, but Charles and Oliver don’t really seem to understand the extent of things. They are also at a completely different point in their lives, so Mabel’s need for a job to be able to afford an apartment isn’t necessarily something they are thinking about.

Cinda’s return and her job offer have the potential to set up some great tension between our trio and hopefully some growth in their relationship.

Stray Thoughts
  • It’s a little surprising Tobert isn’t in this episode.
  • Joy being a suspect is obvious, but it’s still entertaining to watch our trio investigate.
  • Everyone reacting to Charles’ white room moments is absolutely hilarious.
  • Please give us more scenes between Mabel and Kimber.
  • I really hope Charles turned off the stove before going to have sex with Joy.
  • Charles saying Mabel has old lady energy is so funny and surprisingly accurate.
  • Oliver’s heart attack not being mentioned again is annoying. Let’s progress this storyline a bit, please.

“The White Room” is written by JJ Philbin and directed by Adam Shankman.
