The Power Season 1 Episode 9 Review: The Shape Of Power

Reviews, The Power

The cost may outweigh the victories in this thrilling conclusion. The Power Season 1 Episode 9, “The Shape of Power” ends the season with each of the main characters leaving a trail of destruction to achieve their ultimate goal of control.

Some succeed but many create more problems for themselves and others.

The season ends with the confidence that another season may be on the horizon. It doesn’t try to solve any problems but instead sets up more trouble for this world and its characters.

It takes bravery to leave so many open threads of storylines.

The Power Season 1 finale creates this exciting cocktail of character development, political intrigue, moral dilemmas, and shocking moments. It’s a good but frustrating finale.

The frustration comes with the uncertainty of its future.

This Prime Video series excites us for next season without any confirmation of its continuation. This is less a direct issue of the show and more just the nature of the television and streaming world.

The cliffhangers on “The Shape of Power” leaves so much to explore in a potential second season. Roxy and Allie’s storyline is especially intriguing.

The Power
Ria Zmitrowicz (Roxy), Eddie Marsan (Bernie Monke)

Roxy’s storyline and the Margot Cleary-Lopez campaign offer the most interesting storylines of the episode.

Surprisingly, Roxy and Margot’s storylines have been the weaker ones of the season, which is why it’s exciting to see them finish so strong.

“The Shape of Power” proves the value of waiting for the payoff. Everything about Roxy’s storyline on this episode is compelling.

The entire Roxy and Bernie confrontation keeps us on the edge to see if either of them will turn screaming to violence. Ria Zmitrowicz and Eddie Marsan absolutely deliver some top-notch acting in this kitchen scene. You feel each emotional stab and their individual pain.

Child and parent becoming enemies is such a classic tragedy theme that’s often reserved for male characters. It’s nice to see women involved in this Greek-tragedy style dilemma. Roxy’s decision to give Barbara powers presents a fate worse than death for Bernie.

He loses some control and power now. Barbara could easily do what Tatiana did to Viktor to him. Then if finally making Roxy’s family drama intriguing isn’t enough, the show stops teasing us and brings Allie and Roxy together.

This is one of the most interesting cliffhangers because Allie and Roxy embrace each other, but they’re both alpha females.

They may work together or against each other, especially because of their radically different beliefs. This could become the start of a beautiful partnership or the beginning of an intense rivalry. Their new partnership could also find a middle ground of frienemies.

Either way, Roxy and Allie together offer some explosive consequences.

The debate scenes between Dandon and Margot are so well written. It shows Margot has a brilliant response to every bomb that Dandon throws at her, but when she loses her upper hand when he unveils the Ryan secret.

The Power
Edwina Findley (Helen)

It’s such an intriguing scene because it feels real. The jaw-dropping ending just adds to the already powerful storytelling. Because you can definitely see both sides of the argument, but then Margot’s outbursts make Dandon’s side of the debate seem more relevant.

It seems that Margot’s political aspirations may be over. With one loss of composure, her dreams may have been crushed.

The Power Season 1 finale leaves many threads open for a new season. This is exciting but also anxiety-inducing. We want another season to find out what happens, but will Prime Video grant that wish?

Stray Thoughts
  • Rob starts off The Power so strong as this loving, smart, and supportive husband, In only nine episodes, he becomes a mess. Now, he may become a cheating mess.
  • Matty needs therapy more than he needs to follow Urbandox.
  • Ryan is really going through it. Poor kid.
  • Zoia and Tatianna’s devious plan thrills but I worry about Tunde. He’s in over his head at this point. He needs to go home.
