The Power Season 1 Episode 8 Review: Just a Girl

Reviews, The Power

The sparklefingers cause a lot of destruction on the penultimate episode of the season. The Power Season 1 Episode 8, “Just a Girl,” shows our heroines reaching new heights with their power, but that isn’t necessarily a good thing.

We see how misusing and going a step too far can create death, chaos, and casualties. Victims who are women themselves. This is the case with Allie and Tatiana.

They both make a choice to hurt these women to protect and free themselves.

The Power
Halle Bush (Allie)

You can almost understand their decisions, especially after seeing how a cycle of abuse leads Allie and Tatiana here. Nevertheless, it doesn’t excuse their behaviors.

They have gone from the victims to the prey. Additionally, Allie and Tatiana both end up doing terrible things to innocent women, but their intentions are not the same. Allie tries to stop Sister Veronica from reporting her to the authorities.

She knows that she’s tampering with Veronica’s mind, but she doesn’t expect things to go that far. Tatiana acts on impulse when she kills Viktor but her decision to frame and murder Solongo is all premeditated.

Whereas Tatiana and Allie make decisions, and we’ll probably see what happens because of these decisions on the next episode, other characters find themselves at crossroads. Ricky drops the bomb on Roxy that her father probably murdered her mother. Going into the finale, she must decide what to do with this information.

The entire Cleary-Lopez family must figure out their next chapter. Matty, insanely, still sees Urbandox as a hero. The discovery that his mother also has EOD will likely radicalize him even more.

The Power – First Look
John Leguizamo as Rob Lopez

I expect Urbandox to make a big mark on the finale, especially with Matty. Rob makes a really surprising choice by deciding that he wants a divorce. We’re going to see whether Margot puts her career even more above her family in her quest for more power.

Whether Daniel or someone else exposes her power may be an important development in her story next week. “Just a Girl” lays the groundwork for a potentially fascinating season finale.

Margot and Tunde’s storylines align the most at this stage in The Power. Tunde is also using this situation to gain power. Like Margot, he wants to help, but no one can deny that he enjoys his newfound fame and authority.

The quest for power and influence runs deep in Tunde and Margot. Additionally, they are both feeling the consequences of being so ambitious. For Margot, her family falls apart. For Tunde, he risks death time and time again.

Despite the major consequences, they both continue to touch the flames and want more. It’ll be interesting to see if Tunde also decides to stop investigating for his own safety.

The Power
Ria Zmitrowicz (Roxy), Eddie Marsan (Bernie Monke)

Allie and Roxy are another interesting parallel pair. Initially, the similarities in their stories aren’t obvious. However, it’s clear now that both have become important figures in this new revolution.

Allie and Roxy share the sentiment that they both really want a family and feel a bit powerless until these powers come into their lives. They both are using them to their full potential, which is why Roxy desperately wants to know how Allie can heal people with hers.

Their Instagram interaction is also the first time two of the main EOD girls have some communication. It’ll be interesting to see if they continue to talk and eventually meet face-to-face.

The Power season finale streams next week and resolution seems impossible.

The show is not moving towards any sense of closure at this pace. If there is some sort of resolution, it may feel too quick after all the threads of calamity left on this episode.

The Power
Halle Bush (Allie)

Not a single character can have a satisfying ending next week without it feeling too quick. Therefore, the finale may just open even more chaotic threads for these characters.

“I’m Just A Girl” offers an interesting look at choices and consequences as it establishes stakes going into the first season finale. Narratively, it’s enjoyable, but pace-wise, the show presents too much to completely resolve everything in the final episode. This means that fans may need to make peace with having more questions than answers on the season finale.
