Hannah Cheramy Talks ‘From’ Season 2 [Interview]

From, Interviews

The thriller series From on MGM+ is in its second season and there are more horrors than ever for the townspeople trapped in the small town no one ever wanted to visit.

I recently spoke with Hannah Cheramy who plays town teen Julie Matthews about her character’s journey on the show, her real-life connections to the character, and which castmate she’d most like to be trapped in the town with if she found herself there.

When asked what makes From stand out in a sea of streaming television options Cheramy spoke to one of the most unique aspects of the series.

“While it’s a horror show and there’s blood and gore and scares, it’s also about the horrors that live within the town residents. And I think that it’s really great to see, not just the scariness all the time. But also to see the scariest that lives within everybody and to see how they handle it together, and what it does to their psyche,” Cheramy said. “I think it’s it’s a really great balance that they pull off in the show.”

Cheramy also spoke a bit about the evolution of her character since the beginning of the series.

“The evolution of Julie from Season 1 Episode 1 to Season 2 Episode 10 is just… it’s like night and day. I think that what really, really caused her to grow is that she was kind of forced to with the thought that she might lose both of her parents. It really, really forced her into a position of, ‘I need to hold these people closer to me. I need to be more family-oriented. I need to care for my family. And I need to be with them because that’s all I have.'”

“You can really see that in her dynamic with her little brother Ethan,” she continued. “I think they have such a great relationship this season. She’s more caring towards him, and I think it’s really nice to see that. It’s refreshing.

“In Julie’s journey,” she went on to say, “I think they can definitely expect to see growth obviously, and I think that they can expect to see more kindness towards new residents of the town as well. And I think that she gets to have new relationships this season that are interesting and I hope they explore further.”

Cheramy also gave us some insight into the inner workings of the show by sharing how the show has impacted her future career.

“It really, really has been the highlight of like my career. It’s just it’s been amazing, and I know that the relationships that I’ve made on the show, I will also keep for years to come, and I think that that’s an amazing thing that I’ve got on the show.”

Cheramy also shed some light on the collaborative environment found on the set. “John Griffin, our creator and writer, he is so awesome and he will sit down with anybody who wants to have a chat with him about where their character’s going or specifically, surrounding their character,” she said.

“If there was something that I was really struggling with like — oh, Julie wouldn’t do this, Julie wouldn’t say this — I would not feel uncomfortable at all to go to John and say, hey can I pick your brain to see what’s going on here? Because he’s so kind. He’s so understanding.”

The show is all about the day-to-day, or rather night-to-night, survival of the people in the town. I asked Cheramy if she found herself trapped in the town no one would ever want find themselves in, which one of her co-stars she would want by her side.

“You know what, I’m gonna say Pegah Ghafoori who plays Fatima,” she said.

“Not only is she one of my closest friends, but she also is just such a smart, smart girl. And I feel like, if I had her by my side, we would survive well together. And we would understand together, we would be able to get through together. So I think I’d like to stick by her, not just for companionship, but also because she could keep me alive. She’s badass too.”

Even though their personalities differ quite a bit, especially considering who Julie was in Season 1, Cheramy has understands where her character is coming from.

“I really can understand Julie and why she is at the point that she’s at, but I feel like some people maybe read into it a bit and they’re like, ‘Ah, the bratty teenager. All teenagers are like this.’ And I’m like, ‘No. She’s just, she’s gone through a lot more than many, many teenagers probably have you know. The loss of her baby brother, and now she’s in this town. I feel like I would be kind of a monster if I lived there too.'”

From airs Sundays at 9/8c on MGM.
