Will Trent Renewed for Season 2 at ABC

News, Will Trent

Will Trent will return for Season 2 on ABC!

Per TV Line’s confirmation of the renewal, “out of all freshman broadcast series airing this TV season, it delivers the fourth-largest audience, behind CBS’ Fire Country, East New York, and So Help Me Todd.”

The procedural drama premiered on ABC in January with Will Trent Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot.” As Deadline points out, it is the only freshman ABC series to receive a renewal so far. Decisions have yet to be made about The Company You Keep, The Rookie: Feds, Not Dead Yet, and Alaska Daily.

Will Trent is based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling book series of the same title. Slaughter also serves as an executive producer. It follows Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), portrayed by Ramón Rodríguez, who is also a producer on the project.

Per ABC’s synopsis, Will “was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, Will Trent has the highest clearance rate in the GBI.”

“We’re so thankful to our ABC and Hulu fans for joining us on this wild ride and watching Will Trent,” Rodríguez said in a statement, per TV Line.

“When we set out to bring the series to television screens, we wanted to do justice to the gritty, thrilling world that Karin Slaughter created with her bestselling book series,” Rodríguez continued.

“Liz Heldens, Dan Thomsen, and the creative team have developed complex and nuanced characters that people are relating to on a human level — and it hasn’t hurt having our little star, Betty [a Chihuahua played by Bluebell], on the call sheet. We’re so excited for the opportunity to dive deeper into these stories with Season 2.”

The show has been on hiatus since Will Trent Season 1 Episode 10, “Pterodactyls Can Fly,” aired in March.

It returns with Will Trent Season 1 Episode 11, “Bill Black,” tonight at 10/9c on ABC.
