Los Espookys Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Las Ruinas (The Ruins)

Los Espookys, Reviews

The crew finds themselves in a bit of a tough spot on a job with a new addition on Los Espookys Season 2, Episode 3, “Las Ruinas (The Ruins).” The season keeps chugging along with another solid entry and an unexpected escalation for a few of the Espookys’ lives, including divorces, new living situations, and [step] children.

The latest gig involves Los Espookys helping a professor plant some evidence at an archeological dig to prove Professor Robert Roberts’ statement that queer people wear one dangling earring since the dawn of time. While they get the job done relatively quickly, things fall off the rails the day of the dig site search.

Tio Tico joins Los Espookys this week as a new member despite hilariously giving Renaldo a laundry list of reasons why that would be a bad idea. Between Tico’s presence at the site and Renaldo’s Mis Belleza Latina visions popping up at an incredibly inconvenient time, they don’t get the job done.

Instead, they manage to get the professor fired. Because, despite their presence at the site, there was still the matter of the ear lobe miraculously still attached…to a skull. The professor’s conversation with his higher-ups is another fun way that Los Espookys does comedy, with the professor doing a deadpan delivery of the line.

Meanwhile, the Presidential election cycle continues, and Ursula is finding a way to make good on her vow not to have the current President re-elected. Though I thought we would be getting a “she’s running” type of story, having her work Teresa Lobos’ election makes sense and isn’t too much of a vast step towards the absurd.

Hearing about Teresa’s Get Out The Vote strategy involving personal pizzas and sushi rolls while convincing her family to vote for her was just the right amount of absurdity to make it work.

Elsewhere, Andres’ side hustle sees him using his penchant for the dramatic to model staircases at a showroom. Quick shots of the people walking around the showcase add to the laughs as we hear some of them mention that they don’t need a staircase; they need a second floor.

Just as quickly as his career as a model begins, it ends as Andres gets swept off the showroom floor by a mysterious older (and seemingly rich) man willing to keep him. Without an ounce of hesitation, Andres agrees to the terms. But the moment he awakens in his new home, he realizes the agreement comes with an additional term: Step Parent.

Will Andres be entering his evil stepparent era? Is this a bridge too far, or is this just right?

Random Thoughts

  • Andres’ story contribution to the origins of his single dangling earring is pitch-perfect and hilariously delivered.
  • What will Renaldo’s visions amount to? Will it culminate in one of their jobs this season? Was it murder?
  • Ursula’s reaction to Tati’s meeting with Juan Carlos ending with a box of cookies and a yo-yo left me cackling.
  • Melanie’s ambition to become “U.S. ambassador to Miami” absolutely killed me.
