EMMYS, Interviews, Ozark

Following her win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama series for Ozark, Julia Garner spoke with reporters backstage at the 74th Emmy® Awards about her work on the series — including her reaction to her character’s demise.

One of the most shocking parts of Ozark’s ending was, after all, seeing Ruth get killed off by Camila.

It was a controversial twist. However, Garner wasn’t surprised at all when she learned her character would die on the series finale.

“I do a lot of meditation work for my prep. And for some reason what I was seeing was — not to get really dark — but I didn’t see Ruth having a very long life and being like an old lady. And that struck me [as] strange,” Garner said.

“I woke up from the meditation, and Chris Mundy, our showrunner, our wonderful showrunner, called me up and he said, ‘Hey I need to talk to you.’ And I said, ‘Am I gonna die?’ And he’s like ‘Yeah, you are.'”

Then, Mundy asked Garner who told her that her character would die. “I was like, I’ was in a mediation I swear to God!”

“So it was kind of like this weird instinctual thing that I knew, and it was really bitter, bittersweet.”

This was Julia Garner’s third time winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Ozark. She was also nominated this year for her role on Inventing Anna.
