Los Espookys Season 2 Episode 2 Review: Bibi’s

Los Espookys, Reviews

The Espookys crew are tasked with creating a fear-inducing monster for a teacher’s students on another hilarious entry of Los Espookys Season 2 Episode 2, “Bibi’s.”

Los Espookys’ client of the week sees them heading back to school to help a teacher disabuse the students of their love of Baxter, the latest animated monster craze sweeping the classroom. Their introduction to the teacher and the situation is fantastic as they all unknowingly fall into the student/teacher dynamic with their client.

Between Renaldo playing the teacher’s pet to Tati and Andres squabbling over who gets to decorate the prop egg, the details are dropped entertainingly.

I love that we get more of Ursula’s upbringing through that hilarious flashback. The fact that we see Ursula questioning the logic behind the double LL makes so much sense from what we know about her. The introduction of the Royal Spanish Academy in charge of the Spanish alphabet is amusing and helps reinforce Ursula’s disregard for authority.

The child actress for the flashback does a beautiful job channeling Ursula’s blasé manner and determination to win arguments and get her perspective heard. This moment makes Ursula’s comment about the upcoming election feel like it’s alluding to something down the line for her.

While the gig goes off without a hitch, not everything else is going well for the team.

Dreams and Hauntings

Renaldo shares his dreams and hallucinations about Nuestra Belleza Latina with Andres and offers medicinal assistance to help his friend get some answers. While he doesn’t get many answers, he sees her again at the utmost inconvenient moment.

It’s still not entirely clear what she’s trying to tell Renaldo. But will it be an answer we get this season? Will it tie into something more significant?

Renaldo’s mom’s insistence that he would hire this random acquaintance’s daughter for The Espookys is exactly what a Latina mom would do, and it has never been so relatable.

Add to the fact that Monica Martinez, the acquaintance’s daughter, is prepared with a presentation and that her presentation leads to Andres’ demonic parasite, one of the episode’s funnier moments. The comedy only goes further when they commit to the bit and have the parasite interview for a position at the Embassy.

Is the Honeymoon Over?

Elsewhere, Tati is espousing the joys of being married and having a husband while hunting for gold with Ursula; that whole exchange is absolute gold.

Ursula: I don’t like men

Tati: Nobody likes men. But everybody needs a husband

Tati’s upper-crust living starts to change her, and not necessarily for the better if the terrace conversation is any indication. But it seems that her happy life with Juan Carlos is short-lived. After she pulls a Tati-esque stunt with carrots and desserts, she finds herself faced with a mortifying moment and a request for a divorce.

What’s next for them? Between that divorce request and Andres breaking up with Nico, is this the beginning of those two getting back together despite how easily led Andres becomes?

Random Thoughts:

  • Pony watching The Lion King and answering Renaldo’s call mid-Mufasa’s death feels like it encapsulates so much of who this character is.
  • Tico and Sonia’s road trip detour is jarringly funny, especially when he tricks her into thinking that a random fountain is “Niagara Falls.”
  • The whole embassy plot is hilariously absurd and continues to feel that way, especially with how this episode ends with Melanie and her reflection.
