TW: mention of eating disorders

Little Demon Season 1 Episode 6, “The Antichrist’s Monster,” is the show’s best yet, delving into serious territory unflinchingly and gracefully while delivering a heartfelt narrative. It took this reviewer by surprise with how emotional and poignant it is.

Little Demon has had a disjointed run thus far, showing glimmers of promise and bursting with potential. While it’s challenging to navigate the adult animated comedy landscape when countless other series boast the same formula, Little Demon finds its footing with “The Antichrist’s Monster,” carving its path.

CHRISSY: Are you okay?

BENNIGAN: As OK as the classic and underperformed Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

The Isle of Wepwawet storyline is beautifully executed and a visual feast for the eyes. It’s a unique play on “The Rainbow Bridge” storyline. It will be unsurprising if many folks choose to believe their pets traveled to the Isle of Wepwawet when they passed. The concept is comforting and would ease the grief of losing a furry loved one.

“The Antichrist’s Monster” even progresses the character development of Satan and Laura, bridging the gap between them and helping them mend fences through the shared experience of losing Bark Woofalo. We learn Satan isn’t as heartless as he seems, and Laura’s not as impermeable or immune to vulnerability as she seems.

Additionally, the episode follows Chrissy as she attempts to help Bennigan overcome his demons. Firstly, we see what appears to be a Picture of Dorian Gray scenario, wherein Bennigan paints a portrait of what he sees — a grotesque, misshapen monster.

CHRISSY: I got you the latest issue of your favorite comic, “The Roo-Stars,” to remind you that you’re not alone.

BENNIGAN: Chrissy, that’s so clucking nice of you.

Bennigan confesses to Chrissy that he has an eating disorder, and thankfully, “The Antichrist’s Monster” handles this with aplomb and sensitivity. Chrissy tries in vain to assist Bennigan, casting spell after spell to heal his pain. On a separate note, this outing also explores the breadth of Chrissy’s Antichrist abilities, so that’s interesting.

Through this experience, Chrissy inadvertently exposes Bennigan’s insecurities, causing a rift in their friendship. It’s lovely to see the Antichrist try so hard to be good and put her benevolence into practice, even through “demonic” means. Even if the outcome is less than stellar, her heart is in the right place.

This show is becoming adept at delving into hard-hitting issues, especially those associated with mental health and puberty (in Chrissy’s case). While some might find the metaphors too on the nose, “The Antichrist’s Monster” proves that Little Demon is learning how to explore these topics uniquely.

SATAN: If they’re on the beaches of Wepwawet when they die, their soul particles get recycled into new dog souls on Earth.

Overall, Little Demon sticks the landing this week and is slowly but surely smoothing out its wrinkles while keeping its sardonic brand of humor on display. The vocal performances are improving, the narrative feels more focused, and now that we know these characters better, we can wholeheartedly root for them. Who knew a show about the devil and the Antichrist could have so much heart?

Stray Observations:

  • Let it be known that Mark Ruffalo voiced Bark Woofalo, Satan and Laura’s dog. If that doesn’t make you grin from ear to ear, nothing will.
  • The Isle of Wepwawet derives inspiration from Egyptian mythology. Wepwawet is an Egyptian jackal god whose name translates to “Opener of the Ways.” Like Anubis, Wepwawet helps guide souls in the afterlife.
  • Hellhound or not, Bark Woofalo is the cutest dog to ever cute. This reviewer would protect him with her life.
  • That Head of Magnar in Satan’s den claims ’95 is its latest operating system. Apparently, the King of Hell can’t afford to upgrade to this century. Surprisingly, Chrissy didn’t have to deal with a dial-up tone when perusing its files.
  • Everyone needs a loyal pal like Snake With Arms. Expert bartender and mixologist, pro limo driver, and supportive BFF? He’s a keeper.
