Loot Season 1 Episode 8 Review: Spades Night
Loot is a show about found family, but emphasis on the family. And family doesn’t care whether or not you put your bike helmet in the refrigerator so it’s cold when you put it on.
On Loot Season 1 Episode 8, “Spades Night,” Molly realizes that she has not been in contact with her family, so she asks for Howard’s help to reconnect with them.
“Spades Night” is spent getting to know Molly on a deeper level. She has grown distant with her family — but it quickly turns into a tale of reconciliation and redemption.

Maya Rudolph does a spectacular job portraying Molly as someone who understands that she made mistakes, but earnestly seeks her family’s forgiveness. Some great comedic moments are interspersed with genuine family interactions.
“Spades Night” also gives Loot a chance to switch things up in terms of character pairings. Howard and Molly are related, so it stands to reason that they have a family-centric story together.
And boy, do they make a pair. Ron Funches is a great comedic scene partner for Rudolph, which serves as a fun comedic gateway to the rest of their extended family.

The family story as a whole is truly important. It’s essential to seeing beyond Molly’s money into the person she was before she became rich. Her favorite cousin, Renee (Kym Whitley) is at first an unforgiving force, but is also a human being who has missed her cousin and friend.
This story really reinforces the concept that sometimes people’s actions aren’t intended as a slight to others. They can be buried in their own muck. Molly’s apology to Renee is a wonderful, powerful, emotional scene.
Meanwhile, Arthur and Nicholas become desperately interested in the love life of Sofia. Neither of them really knows Sofia that well, and their interest in her works to great comedic effect
Nicholas: Sorry? This is the most interesting thing that’s ever happened in this office!
Arthur and Nicholas are hysterical as they watch Sofia fight with multiple men she’d been seeing. The jokes fly a mile a minute and they really work. It speaks to the cultural phenomenon of being obsessed with others personal lives, but also bonds the cast of characters over something pretty mundane.

Plus, Nicholas and Arthur tag-teaming to read Sofia’s lips is one of the funniest scenes the show has done. Joel Kim Booster and Nat Faxon are truly special.
Loot thrives on the humanity of its characters and the humor in relatable, every day life. “Spades Night” delivers on both of those to great end.
A few stray thoughts:
- “Last night – I completed my menopause!” I hope Rhonda becomes the Jerry Gergich of Loot.
- I really need an episode focused on Howard’s “Ninja College.”
- Sofia thinks Arthur really has a chance with Molly and it warms my heart. Molly and Arthur are clearly endgame.
