The Boys Season 3 Episode 6 Review: Herogasm

Reviews, The Boys

After much anticipation, the event of summer has arrived on The Boys Season 3 Episode 6, “Herogasm.”

After weeks of teasing the herogasm storyline, it’s finally here and just as raunchy, perverted, and vile as expected. There are floating vibrators, the return of Love Sausage, debauchery at every corner, and bodily fluids on every surface.

But if we’re being honest, it does differ from the comics iteration of Herogasm, making it somewhat less enjoyable than expected. In the comics, the main heroes make their trip to a private island where they can embrace their sexual urges. Here, The Deep is the only prominent player to immerse themselves in the event.

With that being said, The Boys‘ attempt at herogasm is still a success, but it’s far from the best moment of the episode.

Herogasm is merely the cherry on top of an action-packed, storyline-driven episode. And if we’re being frank, choosing which moment outdoes the others is difficult.

Between the Homelander/Butcher/Hughie/Soldier Boy fight, A-Train demolishing Blue Hawk, Starlight telling Neuman/Vought to shove it, and more, there’s much to revel in.

The battle between Butcher, Hughie, Soldier Boy, and Homelander is the most superior, gut-churning, supe fight scene we’ve ever seen on television. The past two seasons of abuse and despair caused by Homelander led to this fight for Hughie and Butcher.

While Butcher and Hughie using V24 is still not the brightest idea, it brings immense joy to see the horror on Homelander’s face when he realizes they stand a chance at beating him. Homelander has yet to have anyone put up a genuine fight against him, and now he’s contemplating everything.

After his close encounter with death via Butcher, Hughie, and Soldier Boy, we’ll likely see Homelander completely lose his mind. In fact, it’s almost a guarantee with Starlight calling Vought and him out on their monstrosities and lies.

Speaking of which, way to go, Annie January! As one of the first people to publicly go after Vought in the manner she does, she’s braver than most. Annie is genuinely a good person who cares for others, making her a fan favorite.

Her actions throughout the episode are honorable. Even during a moment when she might get caught in the crossfire of Homelander and Soldier Boy, she still runs towards the chaos in hopes of saving whoever she can.

Annie is one of the first supes in Vought to publicly and actively go against them, so it’ll be interesting to see how they react.

If Homelander kills Annie now, he’ll be admitting that what she says is factual, and he can’t have that. He’s finally got his points back up and the crowd loving him again, so it’s unlikely we’ll see him attack her anytime soon, but he will be reeling.

One unexpected highlight of “Herogasm” is Starlight and MM’s team-up. Very few people around MM are gentle, caring, and genuinely good, so it’s nice for him to have a bonding moment with Annie.

We’ve seen Mother’s Milk struggling with his day-to-day life and speak on it with the ones he loves, so him opening up to Annie is monumental. It’s a genuine moment full of understanding and sincerity between the two. I hope we get more of this duo in the future.

Laz Alonso has been putting in work all season long, but this episode is his best yet. His acting range is astounding, and his portrayal of grief, OCD, and PTSD is palpable and gut-churning.

Mother’s Milk is one of the few relatable characters in the series. He continues to fight to keep his normalcy and not bend to the will in a world revolving around supes, and it’s honorable.

Last but not least, Kimiko is forced, yet again, into a situation she vehemently wishes to avoid, thanks to Nina. I’ve said it in my past reviews, but I’ll repeat it, Kimiko deserves everything she wants and more! She deserves to live a peaceful life without being surrounded by constant violence and death.

Kimiko’s idea of herself is tarnished because, from a young age, she’s been put into horrific situations requiring her to sink to others’ level. She has never been a killer at heart but believes that’s her destiny after continuing to be forced to do so, even with her powers gone.

While expected on a series like The Boys, it’s still unfortunate that Kimiko is not allowed a moment of peace. And from the looks of it, she may never get it. After Nina’s kidnapping and Kimiko’s inability to save herself, Frenchie, and Cherie swiftly, it’s likely she will start looking for ways to get her powers back. After all, why not if she won’t have the luxury of leaving her current life behind?

“Herogasm” is an episode of television history that will continue to be discussed for years. And the fight between Homelander/Hughie/Butcher/Soldier Boy will go down as one of television’s best action scenes.

Stray Thoughts:

  • Did anybody cheer as A-Train drug Blue Hawk on the concrete and killed him? I know I sure did! Instead of waiting for Vought, he takes the situation into his own hands, and I applaud his actions. Blue Hawk had it coming. Racists and fascists don’t deserve a platform of any kind.
  • I need Annie to release the photos of Deep at herogasm. Blackmailing him seems like a waste of time now that she’s on the outs with Vought and Homelander.
  • The Boys recreating the celebrity singalong we had to endure at the beginning of COVID is hysterical!
  • It feels unlikely we’ll see Homelander die this season, seeing as how the series has been renewed for a Season 4. If that’s the case, I lowkey hope that Soldier Boy makes it through the season alive, even though I can’t stand him. Without him, Ryan is the only chance of defeating Homelander, and that time won’t be for a long while.
  • A-Train’s apology for murdering Robin is genuine, but he still deserved that punch from Hughie.
