11 Things We Know About ‘The Boys’ Season 3
When The Boys Season 3 releases in early June 2022, it will have been just over a year and a half since we saw them wreak havoc on our screens. Season 3 was announced right after The Boys Season 2 dropped, so the anticipation has been building for a while.
As a refresher, The Boys Season 2 dealt with a Nazi supe terrorist, Homelander embracing his paternal side (by throwing his son off a house), exploding heads via a supervillain congresswoman, Hughie and Starlight outing Vought and Compound V, The Deep joining a cultish church, and The Boys being cleared of all charges.
So, not much right?
Before we dive back into the world of The Boys (pun intended, can you tell I love The Deep?) here are a few things we know about The Boys Season 3:
1. Hughie and Butcher are working for the Government

As we saw in the Season 3 trailer, our boys have taken a more official role and are now working for the feds on a superhero monitoring task force. We see Butcher and Homelander having a civil conversation at one point, so it seems like tensions have cooled off a bit since the two last met.
Somehow it appears that Hughie is Butcher’s superior in their new roles, but we’ll see who really has the power in that relationship. Odds are, it’s neither of them.
2. The Supe Terrorists have an inside woman

Probably the most exciting reveal of The Boys Season 2 was when we finally found out who was responsible for the exploding heads.
While there were a number of instances when heads exploded (nobody said this was a family-friendly superhero show), the most shocking event was at a congressional hearing.
The Boys (with help from Annie/Starlight) were able to out Vought as a supe “manufacturer” and the legal hearing had made it all the way to congress, where a vocal anti-supe congresswoman was leading the proceedings — think AOC-like persona.
Well turns out she actually a supe in disguise, and the cause of the minds being literally blown. We know Congresswoman Neuman is back in The Boys Season 3, we just don’t know whose side she is on.
3. Jensen Ackles is Suiting up

When it was announced that The Boys would be returning for another season, it was also announced that Jensen Ackles would be joining the cast.
From what we know so far, Ackles is playing a supe called “Soldier Boy,” who is described as “Homelander before Homelander.” Sort of like this universe’s Captain American, Soldier Boy was one of the first supes, dating back to the World War II era when Compound V was created.
Just from the first footage we’ve seen of Soldier Boy, he seems just as deranged as Homelander. And if there’s anything we learned from The Boys Season 2, it’s that supes from the WWII era are not to be trusted.
4. The Seven are Regaining the People’s Trust

It’s no secret that Homelander is one of the most controversial superheroes in The Boys universe. Especially after his team up with Stormfront in The Boys Season 2, he and the Seven have some major damage control to do in order to save face.
If there’s one thing that The Boys makes clear, it’s that these supes are being used by the multimillion-dollar conglomerate that gave them their powers. And after the events of The Boys Season 2, it’s not surprising that Vought is unhappy with their poster children.
I can’t wait to see Homelander’s apology tour, and I hope it includes a screenshot of his apology typed out on his notes app.
5. Butcher is going to the extremes

If the exploding heads reveal was the most shocking part of The Boys Season 2, then Butcher willingly taking some Compound V is the most shocking part of The Boys Season 3 trailer.
The entire thesis for the boys and what they stand for is that they don’t believe superheroes should be manufactured. It’s shocking to see Butcher, the de facto leader of the boys, cross over to the dark side.
I’m sure there’s going to be some internal debate within both himself and the group, but from the footage in the trailer, it looks like he ends up with powers so that he can fight Homelander. Again.
So while the boys and the Seven are supposed to be cooling off, it doesn’t look like it’s going to last for very long.
6. Ryan will make an appearance

One of the core storylines from The Boys Season 2 was the weird “family” dynamic between Butcher, his wife Becca, Becca’s son Ryan, oh and Ryan’s dad, Homelander.
A lot of Homelander’s issues seem to be because the guy has some lingering familial trauma, so it wasn’t surprising when he wanted to play an “active” role in his son’s life. Because Homelander is Homelander, it’s also not surprising that was a massive fail.
When Homelander struck up his relationship with Stormfront, and she urged him to essentially kidnap his son, it turned into a mess for everyone. Poor little Ryan, not knowing how to control his powers, did deal with the Stromfront problem. He just also accidentally killed his mother.
Becca’s dying wish was for Butcher to help raise her son so that he doesn’t turn out to be like his real father, so Butcher helps Ryan settle into CIA custody. That could have been the end of that storyline, but we see Ryan in The Boys Season 3 trailer, so I’m glad he’s sticking around.
7. There is a psych hospital full of supes

One thing that came to light in the midst of the Boys’ hunt for the truth about Stormfront was a secret facility full of failed Compound V experiments. While the Compound V drug has worked thus far on infants, Vought has also obviously been looking to expand to adults.
And it’s not looking good.
There’s a ton of untapped potential just from the supes that are in this facility, and while it’s not clear if we’ll be seeing them again I do think their presence lingers over anything The Boys Season 3 tries to do.
8. The Deep is still on the outside looking in

At the end of The Boys Season 2, A-Train and The Deep have kind of rehabilitated their image after being pseudo-canceled by the public and put on “leave” by the Seven.
Even though The Deep was able to tap back in to help the supes when Butcher and Co. took to the sea (remember that gross beached whale?) and A-Train actually helped the boys uncover Vought’s nefarious practices, it’s The Deep that doesn’t get invited back right away.
The Deep is my favorite of the Seven, partially because it’s Chase Crawford, and partially because he’s really just a clueless try-hard that brings a ton of comedic relief.
He would be the guy who accidentally joins a cult, basically. At the end of The Boys Season 2, his main cult leader’s head ends up exploding, so I’m interested to see where The Deep ends up next.
We see a quick clip of him with Homelander in the trailer for The Boys Season 3, so hopefully, the guy readjusts well.
9. The Boys have settled down

Besides Hughie and Butcher working for the government in some capacity, the rest of the boys have also appeared to achieve some sort of work/life balance in The Boys Season 3.
We know that Mother’s Milk is able to reunite with his family, now that his name is cleared at the end of The Boys Season 2. Hughie and Annie finally seem to be able to date like semi-normal people, although, apparently, Annie’s ex might show up this season.
Frenchie and Kimiko also look to still be together in some capacity in The Boys Season 3, and if the trailer is to be believed, perhaps involved in some sort of dance/musical number?
10. There will be blood

The Boys has always been essentially the antithesis of the MCU, showing really morally corrupt super-beings and showing a lot of gore and violence. The Boys Season 3 is going to continue that trend.
Just from what we’re carrying over from the last season, we already know to expect a handful or more of exploding heads (and yes that means brains), but from the short clips we saw in the Season 3 trailer, there will be a bloodbath.
Be on the lookout for humans jumping out of a skyscraper (with Homelander looking suspicious behind them), someone getting stabbed brutally through the back of the head, and Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy to pummel the daylight out of someone.
That’s not even counting the gruesome superpowers that the Seven are capable of or the powers from some of the new supes joining the cast. Speaking of…
11. More new supes

If there’s one flaw about The Boys, it’s that there are a lot of, well, boys. I’m always glad to see new female cast members joining the crew, whether on the super side or on the anti-supe side.
In The Boys Season 3, there will be a few new super faces joining in on the fun. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, a bit of this season’s plot will follow a spinoff comic entitled “Herogasm,” which is essentially The Boys Universe’s version of DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths.
New supes we can expect to see are Crimson Countess, Gunpowder, Supersonic, and Blue Hawk.
If you watch The Boys Season 3 trailer closely, you may just get a peek at them, including a bit of what their powers are. Looks to me like the Boys have their work cut out for them.
