Legacies Review: Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found (Season 4 Episode 15)

Legacies, Reviews

The Hope we all know and love makes a return on Legacies Season 4 Episode 15, “Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found.”

Thanks to the help of Vincent, Hope is thrown into an astral projection spell and forced to spend the day with her family in New Orleans. We see her question the reality of the situation – like we all did – with Rebekah and being especially nasty in response until Freya makes her appearance.

One by one, Rebekah, Freya, Marcel, and Kol embrace Hope and share fond memories. Well, besides Kol. But Hope continues to put up a front until they mention Klaus’ funeral.

It’s time for Klaus to be put to rest once and for all, but the Mikaelsons need help from the most important family member. After all, they are known for not being able to agree on anything.

With Hope’s humanity flickering, she’ll do just about anything to keep it at bay, even fighting back against the ones she loves. Her sass with Rebekah and Freya is a little unhinged, but Freya hits back even harder without having to be cruel.

Freya: Sweetie, being feared and being strong are two different things. When Rebekah told me you threatened our family – what I was and am, is sad for you.

The sassy and hurtful attitude continues throughout her meetings with her loved ones, but her internal shields drop when asked about what they should do with her father’s ashes.

Discussing the importance of Klaus and how if she had her humanity back, she’d want to keep him allows her humanity to get the upper hand. Even in her attempt at being emotionless in the delivery, Hope can’t deny that talking about Klaus will permanently affect her. Acting tough and being tough are two different things, and she learns that lesson the hard way.

Hope’s battle with her humanity is entertaining but confusing also. In the end, her humanity wins, stabbing the immoral version of herself and smiling as she reduces to a pile of ashes. So, she should be back to normal, right? Wrong!

For some odd reason, instead of Hope returning to her normal self, her immoral version is still acting as her subconscious. It seems as if Hope will be in a constant battle with her feelings for the rest of the season. But hey, if it comes in handy with their inevitable fight with Ken, it can’t be too bad.

It’ll be interesting to see the revelation as to why Hope doesn’t return to normal. No other vampire in The Vampire Diaries or The Originals has had to fight their demons, literally, to return after flipping the switch. I’m sure Hope’s tribrid status will be blamed, but there needs to be substantial reasoning as to why this version of her is sticking around.

“Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found” is a magnificent episode that will go down as one of the series’ best, thanks to the Mikaelson’s reunion. The nostalgia is through the roof as we get a warm welcome back to the streets of the French Quarter; it almost feels like an episode of The Originals.

Legacies is calculated with their approach to Hope reuniting with her family. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment with just their gathering, but bringing Klaus back into the fold makes it God-tier. If we’re being honest, Hope’s humanity being on the brink of return, her family alone could have brought her back.

Instead, we’re given a two-in-one with the mention of Klaus and the decision to leave his ashes with Hope. That connection grants an opportunity for the Mikaelson’s to make a return to Legacies in the future. And, with Kol’s mention of Davina, the possibility could be higher than we all know – or at least we hope it is. There is not nearly enough time spent with the Mikaelsons!

Elsewhere, Lizzie and Aurora do what they must to complete their plan but quickly learn how unprepared they are. In an attempt to get what they want, they trust Ben, but neither anticipates the complete 180 that ensues shortly after.

After realizing that the key to his father has been inside him the whole time, Ben manipulates the two into doing as he pleases. He convinces Lizzie to distract Jen with all of her favorite things, but not because he needs her. It’s a successful attempt at getting Aurora alone, manipulating her feelings, and getting what he wishes in the end by betraying them both and stealing the sarcophagus’.

While it may be jarring, Ben’s evil reveal does not come as much of a surprise. If Legacies does one thing right, it’s making sure couples don’t stay happy for long. We get about one or two good-spirited episodes in a row, if we’re lucky, before things go astray.

What is most saddening about the situation is how it’ll affect Jed. Ben awoke feelings so deep in Jed that he’d had them buried away since he was a child. He has allowed himself to open up, be honest, and put his trust in someone, only for that to be taken away in a blink of an eye. His response to Ben’s deceit is sure to be an upsetting one.

It’s hard to tell if Ben had this plan up his sleeve the entire time, like a diabolical mastermind, or if he saw an opportunity and took it. If Ben has been playing the slow game, he’s extremely patient and has excellent use of reverse psychology.

Moving on from crumbling relationships – Cleo and Kaleb are given the opportunity to enjoy an evening together with no prior obligations. There is no Super Squad nonsense, no Hope drama, and no cares in the world.

A couple on Legacies rarely gets to enjoy a spare moment alone, let alone have actual fun or peace. Cleo and Kaleb’s first date has been long overdue, and intertwining Kaleb’s hometown into the mix makes for a fun adventure. Not only do we get to spend more time with Kaleb and his backstory, but we also see Cleo get some much-needed advice on her powers.

Thanks to Mavis, a local celebrity thanks to her psychic-like abilities and long-time friend to Kaleb, Cleo learns that she may not be as weak as she once thought. Mavis’ help allows Cleo to experience a vision of the future that entails Mystic Falls being ablaze and the Salvatore School reduced to a pile of rubble.

If the gods awaken, it’s all over for them, no matter what their imaginary game against Ken says.

Kaleb: There’s no way I’m letting the world end without getting my second date. No sir.

Kaleb’s optimism shines despite hearing about the doom that awaits them, denying the apocalypse before he can get his second date. It’s an adorable moment between Cleo and Kaleb, even if the circumstances are severe.

Other Thoughts:

  • Lizzie’s reunion with MG and Alaric is marvelous! While it may be at the expense of her relationship with Aurora, she’s better off at the school.
  • Kol’s lack of interaction in the episode is a tad upsetting. He doesn’t get any real screen time, and it’s clear he was only there to mention Davina’s name anyway.
  • With Jen potentially on the Super Squad’s side, they might have a real chance at defeating Ben and Ken.
