Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew Set to Return to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for Season 18 Finale

Grey's Anatomy, News

It’s time to dance it out because Japril will return to Grey Sloan Memorial for Grey’s Anatomy‘s Season 18 finale!

Deadline exclusively reported that Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew would reprise their roles of Jackson Avery and April Kepner on the episode, airing May 26 on ABC.

This celebratory news means the long-running medical drama can give an update on Jackson and April since they were last seen together on the series.

Drew returned as April Kepner on Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 14, “Look Up Child,” to help give Jackson a proper sendoff when Williams exited the show. Drew exited the series in Season 14.

This on-screen reunion three seasons later teased a romantic future as April agreed to join Jackson in Boston, where he would take over his family’s foundation — the Catherine Fox Foundation.

The potential of rekindling their romance stemmed from April and her husband Matthew Taylor having separated sometime since the last time the pair appeared on Grey’s Anatomy.

Boston offered new possibilities for Japril (and their daughter Harper). Rumors even stirred about a potential spin-off.

Though Drew hasn’t appeared on the show since “Look Up Child,” Williams made two more appearances. Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 15, “Tradition,” was his last appearance as a series regular.

That episode featured a bittersweet conversation between Jackon and Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey, where she noted that. with his departure, she was the last one standing from their residency class.

“Tradition” also bid farewell to Greg Germann’s  Tom Koracick as a series regular. Korackick asked Jackson for a job at his family’s foundation to do as much good work as possible after surviving the pandemic. Hence, rumors of a spin-off set in Boston.

Then, Williams made a brief cameo on Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 17, “Someone Saved My Life Tonight,” when Jo bought Jackson’s old apartment for her and Luna.

According to Deadline, Grey’s Anatomy‘s Season 18 finale will have an update on “how Jackson and April are doing a year later.” Hopefully, there is only good news awaiting Japril fans!

Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew join a growing list of returning cast members from the medical drama’s past over the last two seasons.

Season 17 saw the returns of Eric Dane as Mark Sloan, Chyler Leigh as Lexie Grey, and Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd — just to name a few.

Season 18 has brought back Kate Walsh as Addison Forbes Montgomery, Kate Burton as Ellis Grey, and more.

With a medical drama with this much history, it’s exciting to wonder who Grey Sloan Memorial will welcome back next!
